There is no Cate, Russell or Nicole this time around. The Oscar nominations were revealed this morning in LA and there was very little Australian love to be found. Anne Hathaway joined Academy President Tom Sherak to announce the nominees and as expected Avatar was a favourite—the film is up in a total of nine categories, as is The Hurt Locker, including Best Picture and Best Director nominations for both James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow. This is the first year with 10 films in the running for Best Picture, and The Blind Side scored a spot next to films like Up, Inglourious Basterds and District 9.
The acting nods included many of this award season favourites, with nominations for George Clooney and the ladies of Up in the Air, Anna Kendrick and Vera Farmiga. Both Gabourey Sibide and Mo'Nique were recognised for Precious, while Maggie Gyllenhaal scored a Best Supporting Actress nod for Crazy Heart and Matt Damon was honoured for his role in Invictus with a Best Supporting Actor nomination. Three Australians did receive nominations—Janet Patterson for best costume design for her work in Jane Campion's period drama Bright Star and Luke Doolan and Drew Bailey were also nominated for live action short film for their movie Miracle Fish.

Deja Vu... just like 'Titanic' James Cameron is up for all the awards and none of the actors. I smell trout.
1I bet he wins...because it's his 'turn'. I loathe Hollywood politics.
Since I haven't seen The Blind Side, is it really that good? To me, it just looks like another sports movie, so it seems odd that it gets winning and getting nominated for awards.
2Oh, and it would have great to see Abbie Cornish nominated for Bright Star. I saw it last week and she was incredible, and Jane Campion should have been nominated for best director.
Anne looks cute
3so many of these are repeats of the GG's so i'm not at all surprised. i think that what we will be surprised with is when so many of the same ones win. that's not always the case when it comes to the actors/actresses but i feel like this year we might see repeats because the winners already this season really were the ones that deserved the awards
4most noms are just what i expected. (james cameron and avatar and district 9=gag!) but i still love all the newcomers (Gabourey, Carey, Sandra, Anna)...thats so exciting for them.
i'm excited for the hurt locker...the academy loves the underdogs (slumdog, crash, etc). i saw it this weekend and it was pretty intense and i really liked hard ass jeremy renner. granted, i did fall asleep thru some of it due to a hangover...oops! but i'll be getting it on netflix soon enough.
buzz, is "a serious man" supposed to be " a single man"???
5oh, i forgot to mention that i was surprised to see Maggie's name in the running....good for her, i love her roles!
6"A Serious Man" is a Coen brothers flick. I think it got limited release.
Was not expecting the 10 nominees. It seemed like they were reaching on a few. Heh.
Can I say I'm really getting kind of bored of Penelope Cruz? I think she is a solid actress but a lot of her roles are just blending together for me and I don't think she's bringing anything new to the table. Not sure her performance in Nine was award worthy.
7Haha I love the fact that Up got nominated! And District 9!I thought Emily Blunt would get a nomination too.Christoph Waltz and Mo'Nique will most likely win and I hope Colin Firth wins too!
8A Single Man wasn't nominated, redchick - A Serious Man was
Props to Colin Firth for
the Oscar nom though; I love him!
I hate to say it, but I'm pretty sure Avatar will win Best Picture. While I really enjoyed the movie, I do not think it's worthy of the win. I have only seen 6 of the 10 Best Picture nominees thus far, but at this point I think Up in the Air should win because it's so topical. I loved The Hurt Locker too. I think Inglourious Basterds has an outside chance of winning Best Picture as well.
9Yeah, I think Avatar is certainly fabulous to watch with the special effects, etc, but I don't think it's worthy of Best Picture either. I was kind of shocked when it won at the Globes.
10hmm..i've never heard of a serious man, i will have to add that to my list! thanks guys!
11Agreed, Shannolyn. And if Avatar wins Best Picture, you can guarantee James Cameron will win for Best Director. I guess the Academy has decided it is his turn... again.
Kathryn Bigelow's direction for The Hurt Locker was incredible, though.
12My thoughts:
1. I make it a point to see all of the Best Picture nominees every year, but I have ZERO desire to see The Blind Side. It looks like a cheesy Lifetime movie.
2. Pretty cool that District 9 got nominated for BP. I know it won't win, but I'm glad it got recognition.
3. I feel bad for any movie that isn't Avatar. It's going to sweep the awards and I don't think it deserves to. It was a big undertaking, the special effects were incredible, and it looked beautiful. But it definitely wasn't the best movie of the year.
4. As far as the actors go, I think that most of them are easy to predict: Sandy B, Mo'Nique, Jeff Bridges, and Christoph Waltz. Although I refuse to accept that Sandy really deserves it. I haven't seen Precious or Crazy Heart yet, but Waltz was AMAZING in Basterds.
5. I think I'm rooting for Basterds to win best pic.
6. And Kathryn Bigelow to win best director, although she won't. Stupid James Cameron (who is her ex husband, btw).
5.
13NO idea why that extra "5" is there.
14grrrrr. no love for my friend anthony mackie. he was PHENOMENAL in "the hurt locker." should have been in damon's place.
nice to see vera farmiga get a nod. we all know who is going to win the big categories. i do hope "the hurt locker" takes the best picture but they will probably give it to the crapfest known as "avatar." sorry academy, visuals aren't the only thing that make a movie. a romance novel crossed with the lion king is a story we've heard a million times over.
and no love for "moon." grrrrrr...
15^^ moon was awesome!!
16Abbie Cornish in Bright Star, criminally underrated. Same with Moon
17I second that comment about Anthony Mackie. It should have been him instead of Damon. Well, better luck next time. But yay for rest of The Hurt Locker.
18I am disappointed Emily Blunt wasn't nominated. I thought she was amazing in The Young Victoria
19I'm sorry...Emily Blunt isn't nominated and Helen Mirren is? I LOVE Helen Mirren,it's impossible not to, but Emily's performance was much better than Helen's.
20Also, I'm disspointed that (500) Days of Summer didn't even score a nomination...especially when District 9 did.
emily was good in "the young victoria" but rupert friend was AH-MAZING as the young prince albert. i think he has a bright future ahead of him, being keira knightley's boyfriend notwithstanding.
and i love meryl but c'mon. she shouldn't get nominated every time her movies do well. give it someone more deserving...
21The Blind Side over The Hangover? Come on! I am happy with the other best picture nods. So glad that Up is being recognized not only for best animated feature as well!
I hope Kathryn wins best director! But if not, as long as James Cameron doesn't win, I'll be happy!!
Also, happy to see that The Cove and Food, Inc. are nominated for best documentary. They were such inspirational films.
22What a Snooze-fest I can't say i'm exited about any of these.
23Well I thought all noms were well deserved, very glad to see D9 and Up in the list of nominees. Avatar, Blind Side, Precious, Hurt Locker = all amazing movies!
24You guys who mentioned Moon are right on -- I watched it for the first time this weekend! I actually watched it twice. Sam Rockwell was incredible in it.
25I saw "A serious man" over Christmas. Such an interesting film, it got you thinking. A lot! And it was so much better than many of the nominated.
The same goes for "Bright Star" and "The Hurt Locker"!
