Australian Golden Globe Nominees Nicole Kidman, Geoffrey Rush, Jacki Weaver, Toni Collette Leave Empty-Handed

Aussies Leave the Golden Globes Empty-Handed

We had high hopes for our Australian nominees at yesterday’s Golden Globes — Nicole Kidman for her leading role in Rabbit Hole, Geoffrey Rush for his best supporting actor nod in The King’s Speech, Jacki Weaver for her role in Aussie film Animal Kingdom, Toni Collette for United States of Tara and Sia for her co-writing credit on the song “Bound To You” in Burlesque — but sadly none of them left the show with an award.  Nicole had tough competition against awards season darling Natalie Portman and Geoffrey lost to Christian Bale, who’s been garnering heaps of buzz for his role in The Fighter. Jacki lost to Melissa Leo, also from The Fighter and Sia lost in her category to another song from the same movie, written by Diane Warren. And we thought Toni — who couldn’t make it because she’s too pregnant to fly — stood a good chance for best actress in a comedy or musical TV series seeing she took home the trophy last year, but the HFPA awarded it to Laura Linney for her work in The Big C this year. However this doesn’t mean their Oscar hopes have been dashed — there’s still a good chance Nicole, Geoffrey and Jacki can score nominations when they’re announced on Jan. 25.
