The 2013 Brit Awards (the British equivalent to the Grammy Awards) kicked off in London last night, and Taylor Swift was one of the first to arrive in style wearing a sheer black Elie Saab gown. While we love seeing the singer in her signature sequins, we couldn't be more thrilled that she went with something a bit more sleek and sexy this time. Step inside to get a closer look at Taylor's full ensemble and to find out what other stars like Rita Ora, Gemma Arterton, and Lana Del Rey picked for last night's festivities.
Celebrities had their work cut out for them this week, that's for sure! Between hitting the SAG Awards on Monday (not to the mention all the pre-SAG parties!) and the AACTA Awards on Wednesday, they were up to their ears in red carpet events and glam nights out. There were multiple premieres happening around the same time across the globe, including ones for Australian Teresa Palmer's new film, Warm Bodies, and Diane Kruger's new German film. But it wasn't all glitz and glam! Some of the most beautiful pics we saw this week were of happy families reuniting — Keith Urban sure looked glad to have his girls back as they arrived home in Sydney. . . There's plenty more to see, so click through to catch up on the week's happenings!
It's been a big week here in Sydney, with lots of red carpet events and celebrity sightings to fill up our time. PopSugar editor Jess was up to her ears in Aussie stars (and a couple international) when she hit both the AACTA Awards and the Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters premiere in Sydney. We spied so many gorgeous dresses on people like Cate Blanchett and Jessica Mauboy, and we were loving Megan Gale's dark, voluminous waves when she stepped onto the carpet. Ali went to fashion showings and received a very cool, very Chanel gift, while Alison's been trying out some new nail polish colours and perfecting her travel beauty kit. There's plenty more behind-the-scenes action to see — click through to check it out!
The red carpet was rolled out in front of The Star in Sydney for the second annual Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards last night. The festivities kicked off in the afternoon as the country’s brightest film and TV stars posed for photos and chatted to media on their way into the ceremony. Most of the buzz surrounded The Sapphires, which many actors said they loved — the film, which was up for the most honours, ended up winning 11 of the 12 awards it was nominated for. It was also a successful year for home-grown TV, with plenty of celebrities sharing their love for Puberty Blues.
As for the talent, it was a mix of high-profile Aussies and locally-loved stars who added to the glamour of the event. Cate Blanchett was a vision in red sequinned Armani while Nicole Kidman, who was lovingly greeted at the airport that morning by husband Keith Urban, opted for strapless Erdem. The young stars of Puberty Blues — Brenna Harding, Ashleigh Cummings, Isabelle Cornish, Charlotte Best and Sean Keenan — were out in force and hung out with their onscreen parents, Dan Wylie, Jeremy Lindsay-Taylor and Susie Porter. Visiting Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters stars Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton brought some international star power to the proceedings, and The Sapphires’ Jessica Mauboy, Deborah Mailman, Shari Sebbens and director Wayne Blair made their entrance together. Rounding out the arrivals was Joel Edgerton, who escorted his reported fiancée Alexis Blake on the way in.
It's almost Valentine's Day, which means it's also the perfect time to play around with pink and red makeup, and Gemma Arterton has already taken her love-hued palette out for a spin. At the premiere of her new movie, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, Gemma went for a rosy flush on her cheeks, eyes, and lips.
The feminine look paired with soft curls is perfect for a romantic night out. To get an equally flattering look, try cream blushes and shadows, which give you a more dewy, ethereal finish. Start by working Model Co Cheek and Lip Tint ($34) onto the apples of your cheeks and then sweep Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Shadow Creme in Pink Pearl ($40) onto your eyelids. For added flair, dab a touch of the lip tint into the centre of your lips. Or, pick a semi-matte colour like Clarins Joli Rouge Moisturising Lipstick in Rose Berry ($37.80). The three colours will work together to create a flawlessly flushed palette, perfect for anytime you're in a romantic mood.
With the help of a ‘blood-spattered’ white carpet, trees and a machine that produced bubbles for a fake snow effect, Event Cinemas on George Street was transformed into a grim Winter wonderland for the Australian premiere of Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (out Feb. 7) last night. Leading stars Jeremy Renner, in Vivienne Westwood, and Gemma Arterton, beautiful in an Erdem dress and Bulgari jewels, were on hand to promote the dark action flick, along with writer/director Tommy Wirkola and producer Kevin Messick.
British beauty Gemma did most of her own stunts in the movie — one that was too dangerous saw her character fall through three floors in a house, which resulted in her stunt double getting a “rusty old nail through her ear, like right close to her brain! But she was OK!” — and sustained an injury when she accidentally “cut my thumb open on a blade because [laughs] I forgot it was a real blade. It wasn’t even in the stunt, I was just running my finger across it, because usually it’s a blunt knife that you use. I just ran my finger along it and [makes cutting noise] — it was horrible. Right open. It was on the last day so it was OK.”
Jeremy, who was back in Sydney after a quick promotional trip for The Bourne Legacy last August, talked about the film’s lighter moments that aren’t heavily featured in promos and trailers: “There are some funny moments. I would never call it a comedy — it was just by circumstances that were absurd that make it have a sense of humour to it. And we don’t take ourselves too seriously in the movie. There’s a slight wink to a lot of the things that we do in it, so we’re not just these brooding witch hunters.” Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters is considered a fairy tale for adults and when asked whether he’d like to do more child-friendly movies, Jeremy responded, “Not really, but it would be nice to do one or two.”
The blockbuster opened strongly in the US last week but has received poor reviews from critics. Both Jeremy and Gemma weren’t fussed by the criticism, with Gemma saying, “It’s not for them, it’s for the audience and they seem to be enjoying it, so that’s the main thing.”
Over the past couple of years it seems like pop culture has been revisiting classic fairy tales for sources of action on the big and small screen — think Snow White and the Huntsman, Once Upon a Time, Red Riding Hood and Grimm, to name a few. The latest storybook tale to make the blockbuster transition is Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, which sees the gingerbread house-eating siblings (Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton) transformed into badass, gun- and crossbow-weilding bounty hunters who have one mission: find witches and kill them. In this exclusive clip, Gretel comes face-to-face with Muriel (Famke Janssen), a witch who appears to be beautiful on the outside but shifts right before Gretel's eyes. Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters is released in Australia on Feb. 7, and stars Jeremy and Gemma will walk the red carpet at a Sydney premiere on Jan. 29.
The fashion pack was in full party-regalia mode last night to celebrate the London Evening Standard Theatre Awards. Models Jourdan Dunn and Cara Delevingne showed off their sleek style in formfitting gowns by Burberry, while Felicity Jones and Anna Wintour opted for more traditionally opulent evening numbers. Gemma Arterton stunned in a bejewelled Lanvin frock, while street-style star, and Tank magazine editor, Caroline Issa glowed in a floral-print gown by Erdem. With the IWC Filmmakers Dinner, Chopard's Mystery Party and the premiere of Killing Me Softly all happening overnight, Cannes served as the place to look for inspiration of the glitzy, glamorous kind. British beauties Gemma Arterton and Bonnie Wright were amongst the IWC Filmmakers Dinner attendees, while models Erin Wasson, Anja Rubik and Liu Wen made the Chopard party all the more beautiful. Also out and about: Diane Kruger, Natasha Poly, Irina Shayk, Rita Ora, Kelly Brook, Petra Nemcova and Cassie Ventura. See the most popular looks.
Following on from the star-studded front rows of New York Fashion Week, its British counterpart London Fashion Week has also had plenty of well-dressed celebrities in attendance at the shows. Kristen Stewart and Kate Moss made an exciting pair early on at Mulberry, where Kristen showed off her long hair extensions for her role as Snow White. Pippa Middleton showed her support for Temperley, while Burberry continued to prove why it’s one of LFW’s main attractions with a front row that included Sienna Miller, Kanye West, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Gemma Arterton. There were lots of other LFW regulars, such as Olivia Palermo, Dannii Minogue and Bonnie Wright. For the latest on the fashion and beauty trends, check out FabSugar and BellaSugar!
