Hey Dad! Actor Robert Hughes' Daughter Jessica Defends Him Against Molestation Claims Made By Niece Melinda O'Donnell

Robert Hughes' Daughter Jessica Comes to His Defence

On Sunday night, Channel Nine screened a special episode of A Current Affair in which Melinda O’Donnell, niece of former Hey Dad! star Robert Hughes, came out and accused her uncle of molesting her multiple times before the age of ten. This follows on from when his Hey Dad! child co-star Sarah Monahan made the same allegations against him in March last year. Melinda also gave an interview to Today Tonight which aired last night, where she made the allegations again. (She says he “grabbed me, tickled me and touched me inappropriately.”)

Now Robert’s daughter, Jessica, has released a statement defending her father. She said, “I am appalled and outraged about claims made on national television regarding my father and my childhood. To imply I have ever been involved in, or was aware of, these sordid allegations is offensive and completely untrue.” Jessica also believes that the media have been using her father for the sake of ratings, and thinks money is the reason Melinda is only speaking out now. Robert now lives in Singapore. NSW police are still in the middle of their investigation.

If you study her face right through the interview, not one tear rolls down the face. She sobs, she wipes at her eyes but wipes are so infrequent that if she were really crying, she should have had tears dripping off her chin. Watch the crease between her nose and her cheek. Not one tear! I'm not saying Robert is innocent. All I'm saying is she appears to be wiping away tears that aren't there.

Yeh, I don't like the whole go on tv and talk about it before he is found guilty. Shows like A Current Affair and Today Night should be ashamed- these allegations tarnish reputations forever... And why oh why did this Melinda go on TV, seeing as Sarah Monahan copped a lot of flack for having gone on TV for the same thing. STUPID. Personally, I have a feeling he is guilty of abusing Monahan... but then again, I may be seeing things I wouldn't have had I not seen him being accused of being inappropriate. I guess we have to let the courts decide... and FAT chance of a fair trial... His team of lawyers will be able to cast enough suspicion over their motives just due to the TV interviews... BUT, if that's what Monahan wanted (and she did say she went on TV cos there wasn't enough evidence for a real prosecution) and the allegations are true (which only people who witnessed it would know), then justice is served. As for Melinda- jumping on the bandwagon doesn't make you look trustworthy- if she had kept quiet and waited until a trial, she may have been believed. Also, the daughter- who would ever believe their father would do something like this? Of course she would deny it... Poor thing. Oh and P.S- I didn’t watch the Melinda interview- of the Monahan one. LOL… But I did read about it. I loved Hey Dad and now this whole thing makes me feel icky. Having been inappropriately touched as a teen, I feel a bit betrayed… but anyway, I guess time will tell.
