Hollywood has seen its share of movies about magicians, but a movie about magicians who are also bank robbers? Now that's something new. In the trailer for Now You See Me, Jesse Eisenberg's character leads a group of illusionists (including Isla Fisher, Woody Harrelson, and Dave Franco) in a grand showcase of their talents — and let's just say they've got a lot more than card tricks in their bag. In a Robin Hood-esque turn, the team successfully manages to rob a bank during the show and showers the audience in money. Not everyone is impressed, though, and a couple of FBI agents (Mark Ruffalo and Mélanie Laurent) are determined to take them down.
The trailer is fresh and different enough to get me excited about this movie, especially since it features some of my favorite underrated actors (along with ones we all know and love). I'm also glad to see Eisenberg playing something other than the twitchy geek we've seen him play so many times before, and he actually appears to be pulling off cockiness here. Jesse Eisenberg stars as Eli, a musical genius who just wants to get into a piano program, in the dramatic comedy (or is it a comedic drama?) Why Stop Now. Interfering with his ability to pursue his scholastic goals is his alcoholic, drug-addicted mother, Penny, played by Melissa Leo. He's already used to taking care of his little sister, but now, on the day he's scheduled to audition for his spot in a music program, he must rally his mom to enter rehab. Of course, it's not as simple as it sounds, and the family gets tangled up in an adventure with Penny's outlandish drug dealer, Sprinkles (Tracy Morgan).
The premise of this movie makes it sound like a typical drama: kid has a gift, kid can't flourish with his dysfunctional surroundings, kid eventually escapes and makes it big (or not). That's also how the preview begins, before it takes a sharp right turn into wacky comedy territory. I'm a little concerned about the uneven tone, but the preview is also reminiscent of Little Miss Sunshine, which is a good thing. Penelope Cruz joined her To Rome With Love director Woody Allen for their first photocall this morning. The duo popped up, appropriately, in Rome for their a.m. press duties alongside Penelope's costars Roberto Begnini, Alec Baldwin, and Jesse Eisenberg. Alec brought along his brand-new fiancé for the trip. She tweeted yesterday, "I love Roma." Jesse, meanwhile, showed off an interesting new look, with a layered, straightened hairdo — what do you think of Jesse's updated style? Penelope, Woody, and the gang have many more interview stops to make before the film is out here in the US on June 22. It's out first, though, in Italian theaters next Friday.
Woody Allen has hit home runs with European-set films Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Match Point, and Midnight in Paris, but can he do it again in Italy? We'll have our answer with To Rome With Love, which follows another star-studded cast as their love lives get a little more complicated in — you guessed it — Rome. This time, the lineup includes Jesse Eisenberg as a guy who's seduced by his girlfriend's friend (Ellen Page), Penelope Cruz as an Italian prostitute, and Allen himself wearing some pants that are pulled up very high.
As with Midnight in Paris, it's obvious that the setting is going to be a major character here, which is enough of a reason for me to be enticed by the film. My only gripe is that Page seems a bit miscast as the boyfriend-stealing sexpot, but I can definitely see her and Eisenberg as a match. The R-rated comedy is alive and well this Summer, and 30 Minutes or Less gives the genre one more jolt of vitality. Jesse Eisenberg plays Nick, a twentysomething guy stuck in a dead-end pizza delivery job. One night he gets a delivery to a couple of lazy losers, Dwayne and Travis (Danny McBride and Nick Swardson), who need a middleman for the boneheaded get-rich-quick scheme they've just devised. The need money to hire a hit man to kill Dwayne's wealthy father so Dwayne can collect his inheritance. Instead of getting the money themselves, they strap a bomb to Nick's chest and demand that he figure out a way to get the money, or they'll detonate the poor guy.
Joining Nick on his do-or-die mission is his best friend Chet (Aziz Ansari), who begrudgingly agrees to help him in his endeavor, despite the fact that they'd been feuding, and you know, might end up in prison. The onscreen chemistry between Ansari and Eisenberg fuel their adventure, and a healthy amount of laughs make 30 Minutes or Less an enjoyable Summer morsel. In 30 Minutes or Less, Jesse Eisenberg plays a slacker pizza boy who is forced to rob a bank after a couple of low-lifes (played by Danny McBride and Nick Swardson) strap a bomb to his chest. He gets some help from his best friend (Aziz Ansari), but the hijinks that ensue are both hilarious and explosive. We had the chance to sit down with Eisenberg and Ansari at San Francisco's Goat Hill Pizza, where the guys talked about blending film genres, what surprised them about each other, and who they'd want to rob a bank with.
Jesse Eisenberg and Aziz Ansari got together at SF's Goat Hill Pizza on Wednesday to promote their upcoming movie 30 Minutes or Less. The comedic caper features Jesse as a pizza delivery driver who gets roped into a bank robbery, and Aziz costars as his best friend, a schoolteacher. The pair got instruction on using the registers from some amused employees and handed out pepperoni slices to fans who stopped by. Jesse and Aziz are getting an early start getting the word out about 30 Minutes or Less, which hits theaters on Aug. 12. The film gives Jesse a chance to let his silly side shine, but in the meantime, his drama Holy Rollers hits theaters in the UK today.
