Clint Eastwood's Invictus may appeal to some as a historical story about Nelson Mandela; others will see it as another sports movie about a rugby team. Whatever the reason for heading to the theater, the film has the unique ability to take the audience on a journey that will leave you cheering when it's all over—even if the story seems familiar.
Invictus takes us to South Africa in 1994, the year that Nelson Mandela took the presidency after spending 27 years in prison. Faced with the mountainous task of uniting a nation post-apartheid, Mandela turns to rugby captain Francois Pinnear (Matt Damon) to give the divided masses a cause they can all rally behind. That's just the tip of the iceberg though, so
Movie Watch: Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman in Invictus
In the upcoming film from Clint Eastwood, Matt Damon stars as Francois Pienaar, a real-life member of South Africa's rugby team who's summoned by Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) to rally support in the country and unite the racial divide.
I love Matt Damon, but I'm actually more interested in Morgan's performance in Invictus. It looks like one well-done biopic and it's obviously Morgan's Oscar film—but Matt doing an accent might also translate into a nomination. (Not to mention that many things Clint touches turn to Oscar nods). Warning: If cheering crowd scenes and African singing often play with your emotions, you may get goose bumps while watching this preview. The movie opens on January 21. Check it out and tell me what you think.

Palm Springs Film Festival Brings Out Big Award Show Names!
Anna Kendrick, Mariah Carey and Marion Cotillard may become especially familiar faces this award season thanks to their acclaimed films, and the three lovely ladies were among the attendees at last night's Palm Springs International Film Festival gala. Anna joked on the red carpet about learning how not to fuss with herself when she's all done up, saying, "I'm trying to get used to the dresses and the heels and trying not to play with my hair when it's been so perfectly coiffed." Meanwhile, Mariah just gushed about how lucky she is to have landed a part in Precious since the book on which the movie is based means so much to her.
The gala kicked off the festival that runs until January 17, which is the night of the Golden Globes and right before Sundance. Anna took the stage during the evening, while the esteemed Quentin Tarantino, Morgan Freeman and Clint Eastwood also attended, brushing off their tux collections for what will no doubt be a busy few months. Overall, the night was a success and set the mood for the much-anticipated awards season, including today's People's Choice Awards!
Maddox Joins the Adults Brad, Angelina, Matt, Clint For Invictus
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie weren't the only special guests at this weekend's Invictus premiere in LA — they brought their eldest son Maddox to pose and mingle on the red carpet. The eight-year-old was decked out in a fedora just like his dad often wears, as he mingled with the film's big-name cast.
The movie's stars Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman, as well as director Clint Eastwood, were also there, fresh off Wednesday night's NYC screening. And with Invictus getting Oscar buzz already, here's hoping we see a lot more of these handsome faces during award season.
Matt, Morgan and Hilary Celebrate Clint's Moving Image
NYC's Museum of the Moving Image hosted Hollywood's finest last night at its Salute to Clint Eastwood event. Clint himself hit the red carpet alongside Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman after recently directing them both in Invictus. Hilary Swank, who worked with Clint in Million Dollar Baby, joined the boys as she posed for photos in her blue dress. Matt was coming off another afternoon on the set of The Adjustment Bureau, looking dapper in his tux alongside his wife Luciana. Despite his long days filming, Matt is managing to keep his nightlife schedule jam-packed.. One project Matt might not be starting anytime soon, though, is a fourth Bourne Identity film, since the series' director, Paul Greengrass, has dropped out of the project and Damon's participation may now be in question.
