Ryan Gosling is used to being the one directed in shirtless situations, but the roles were reversed yesterday on the Detroit set of How to Catch a Monster when Ryan called the shots. The actor continued production on his writing and directorial debut by shooting scenes with Matt Smith, who has a huge fanbase thanks to his turn as Doctor Who. Matt showed off a shaved head and very muscular physique in the scenes, which saw him singing while standing in a moving car and lifting weights. The fantasy noir also stars Ryan’s The Place Beyond the Pines co-stars Eva Mendes and Ben Mendelsohn, his Drive co-star Christina Hendricks, and Irish actress Saoirse Ronan. It was also recently announced that Warner Bros. had acquired the movie.
The Place Beyond the Pines: A Gripping Generational Story
The Place Beyond the Pines finds Ryan Gosling re-teaming with his Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance for a striking drama about fathers and sons. Gosling plays Handsome Luke (yes, he's even dubbed a heartthrob by the announcer at the carnival for which he does motorcycle stunts), a guy from the wrong side of the tracks who finds out he has a baby with an old fling, Romina (Eva Mendes). Luke's discovery and subsequent foray into robbing banks in a misguided attempt to provide for his family would be enough fodder for a whole movie, but The Place Beyond the Pines takes a sharp turn with the entrance of Avery (Bradley Cooper), a well-to-do cop who has a run-in with Luke while on call. Almost immediately, the film becomes Avery's story until the final third when it picks up 15 years later. It's an unorthodox format, but the risk pays off.

The way the film is laid out is one of its most unexpected and potentially polarising elements, as viewers expecting to see Cooper and Gosling share a lot of screen time will be disappointed. Though technically it could be described as a crime thriller, it's really a story about a robber, then a story about a cop, then a story about their kids. Once you get past how jarring the format can be, The Place Beyond the Pines is pretty remarkable. To find out what else I think of the movie, just read more.
See All the Pictures of Ryan Gosling Looking Hot (as Always) in Only God Forgives
You don't have to wait long to see Ryan Gosling on the screen again — this year, he's starring in Only God Forgives, in which he reunites with his Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn. In the drama, he plays a former kickboxer seeking revenge for his brother's murder in Bangkok — and while the trailer is very violent, we'll spare you the gory details here. Instead, click on for pictures of Mr. Gosling doing one of the things he does best: looking mighty fine.
Only God Forgives Trailer: Ryan Gosling Gets Really Violent
Those who enjoyed 2011's Drive may enjoy the red band trailer for Only God Forgives, the next collaboration from director Nicolas Winding Refn and star Ryan Gosling. The heartthrob plays Julien, a former kickboxer living in Bangkok. When his brother is murdered by a police lieutenant, Julien attempts vengeance on his family's behalf. If the trailer is any indication, then Julien is a man of few words, as the only thing he says is, "Wanna fight?" Words may be scarce — except for a few disturbing ones from Julien's mother, played by Kristin Scott Thomas — but the violence is cringe-worthy.

Drive has a unique combination of fantastic art direction and some brutal violence, and it looks like Only God Forgives could be headed in the same direction. That said, I'm a little worried that the latter will be even more gory than Drive, which is saying a lot. The film hits cinemas this year, but you can watch the trailer after the jump.
Ryan and Eva Screen Their New Flick Alongside Bradley Cooper and Katie Holmes
Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes were joined by their co-star Bradley Cooper when they screened their new film, The Place Beyond the Pines, in NYC on Friday. Ryan wore a green velvet Gucci suit while his girlfriend, Eva, donned an orange Prada frock. Bradley made the trip to the Big Apple from Boston, where he is currently filming a still-untitled David O. Russell film alongside Amy Adams and his Silver Linings Playbook co-star Jennifer Lawrence. He was spotted earlier this month wearing pink curlers on set, but at the premiere he showed no signs of a wavier 'do, instead opting to slick his long hair back off his face.
Katie Holmes was also in attendance after returning to the Big Apple from a trip to Disney World with Suri. Fans of Ryan Gosling may want to catch this film, as the actor recently announced that he might be taking a break from acting. Don't forget to check out our review of The Place Beyond the Pines to see if Ryan's latest project is for you.

Ryan Gosling Strolls in NYC Amid News of His Acting Hiatus
Ryan Gosling was on the move in NYC yesterday sporting spectacles and clenching the out-of-print novel El Topo. He may be turning to books now that he's taking a break from acting. Ryan told the Associated Press that he needs to "reassess" and regain "lost perspective," saying, "I need a break from myself as much as I imagine the audience does."
The hiatus doesn't mean we won't be seeing Ryan on the big screen soon since he's currently promoting The Place Beyond the Pines ahead of its March 29 US release (May 9 in Australia). The film also stars his real-life girlfriend, Eva Mendes, and while the couple travelled to NYC last week for a press trip, they weren't spotted together in the Big Apple. Audiences can also anticipate Ryan's Only God Forgives, which is set to be released later this year.

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes Pair Up For NYC Press Trip
Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes got together for their Place Beyond the Pines NYC press trip on Sunday. The couple was spotted boarding a plane together in LAX, and later they joined up for a press conference shortly after landing in the Big Apple. In addition to Ryan and Eva, The Place Beyond the Pines stars Bradley Cooper, who wasn't with the couple for the first part of their trip, as he was busy hanging out with Josh Brolin and Michael Fassbender in LA. The film follows a former motorcycle stuntman who becomes a bank robber to support his girlfriend and their newborn child. The project holds special significance for Ryan and Eva, as it's where they met. It opens in Australia on May 9.
