Australian film The Sapphires premiered at the Cannes Film Festival over the weekend and received a standing ovation. It’s making lots of noise, and not just because it’s about four sisters from the Australian outback who are plucked from obscurity from an Aboriginal mission, turned into a girl band and sent to perform in Vietnam for troops. Sure, these girls have the talent, but it’s about more than their singing and dancing as their friendship endures ups and downs along the way.
Acclaimed actress Deborah Mailman and former Australian Idol runner-up Jessica Mauboy headline a talented, fresh-faced cast that also includes Bridesmaids star Chris O’Dowd as the man who tries to turn The Sapphires into Australia’s version of The Supremes. It looks like a feel-good movie through and through, and opens nationally on August 9, so check out the trailer after the break.
