The Shire First Episode Recap and Thoughts

If Network Ten and the producers of The Shire simply wanted to get people talking about the characters of the new “dramality” that premiered last night, that’s exactly what happened, with lots of social media activity and #TheShire quickly becoming a Twitter trending topic. (In terms of ratings, it attracted 941,000 viewers.) There was one point that people were keen to get through their statuses and tweets: the show felt about as real as Sophie and Vernesa’s lips and Beckaa’s nose. High production values, along with the show’s picturesque beach setting, made it seem more like a TV soap, and then there was the “acting” of the cast, which attracted the most criticism. Awkward pauses, conversations that felt way too scripted for a soft-script show, and set-up situations (like Mitch bumping into ex-girlfriend Gabby on the beach, and Rif Raf’s house party) were the most obvious examples.
