Keith on picking Darren over Diana: “I think there are some hard decisions and there are some really impossible ones. I think it was an almost-impossible one last night. When I used the reference of Luther Vandross and Etta James, what I mean is that you have two excellent voices, excellent singers, excellent performers . . . I think early on, with things like the battle rounds, we were thinking, ‘Let’s just [choose based] on tonight’s performance only.’ But I think this far into the show it’s now about overall consistency from everybody. We’ve got great singers, but to me, the voice is the instrument that conveys everything about that person — their life experience, their pain, their soul, heart, everything comes through the voice. We’ve got some great singers, and then there are singers who, like with Darren, when I hear his voice I know who he is.”
