Winter winds and cool temps can leave your face all flushed but if you're having a ruddy old time of it, there are lots of ways to calm your skin down and tone things down.

Try an aspirin mask: This inexpensive anti-inflammatory is great for redness of all kinds. You just crush up a bunch of plain, uncoated aspirin, mix in a little water until it's a thick paste and then leave it on the affected area for 20 minutes. It's a great way to relieve sunburn, too so remember it for Summer!

Sit in a cool oatmeal bath: Oatmeal has emollient and anti-inflammatory properties, and if you're prone to skin redness, you'll want to avoid hot water altogether. Sitting in a cool oatmeal bath is good for getting rid of all kinds of redness. And if it's facial redness you're worried about, slap on some plain oats in cold milk. The oatmeal will help get rid of redness and moisturise and the lactic acid in milk is an extra-gentle exfoliator, so damaged or flaking skin gets sloughed off.

Keep reading . . .Make yourself a cup of chamomile tea: Grab a few chamomile tea bags and soak them in cool water. In a pinch, chamomile makes a good compress because it has anodyne and anti-inflammatory properties. Drinking a cup can sometimes help, too.

Spread on some calamine lotion and lanolin: Cooling calamine lotion gets rid of the itch of red skin and lanolin is an emollient and protective barrier.
