How to Get Healthy, Natural Hair Like Erin Wasson

4 Ways to Give Yourself a Hair Holiday

The latest hair craze to sweep the beauty world is one that may be a little surprising: hair that appears as if it hasn't been touched by a styling tool. Naturally styled hair may look amazing (and allow you those extra couple minutes of sleep), but hair that magically does what you want it to without styling is just a myth, right? Stylist Vanessa Fernandez of the Butterfly Studio Salonin New York City doesn't believe so. "Great hair is about getting your hair as healthy as possible," she says. "Treat your hair to get it back to a healthy state, and always keep it nourished." Read her tips for how to give your hair a break when you keep reading.

  1. Start from square one: Vanessa suggests asking your stylist for an in-salon treatment or an at-home hair mask routine to restore the health to your hair. "Leave-ins are a must," she says. "You have to ask an expert." Talk to your stylists about treatments that will help bring your hair to its former glory and stick to them for as long as they advise.
  2. Lay off the heat: Addicted to your hair dryer? Vanessa stresses the importance of knowing when to turn it off. "Work on polishing just the front and crown sections and allowing the rest (usually the back) to air dry," she says. Since the hair at your roots is newer, it's much stronger than your more delicate ends.
  3. Get creative: "Play with braiding or pin the hair up or to one side over restyling your hair," Vanessa says. Or if your hair isn't long enough to style up, just focus on keeping the roots as clean and polished as possible.
  4. Treat your hair right: The most important thing about your hair is how you treat it. "Don't cut corners," Vanessa says. "Trim and treat it often and it will make a huge difference." Investing in more frequent haircuts will change your hair, making its natural state one that's easier to work with, which reduces your need to style it so drastically. Funny how that works, isn't it?
