How to Make Your Skin Look Matte and Not Shiny

How to Mattify Your Skin the Right Way This Summer

We've been told time and again that we should steer clear of powders, since they have an unflattering result. Understandably, you might be wondering how to mattify an oily complexion the right way, or how to get a matte finish without looking like you went crazy with powder. To get the experts' take on how to master the art of matte this Summer, keep reading.

  1. Prep Your Skin Before Makeup: "A great way to mattify your skin and keep it shine-free throughout the day is to start off by prepping your skin with an oil-free or oil-controlling face lotion," says makeup artist Kindra Mann.
  2. Apply Powder With a Brush: Powders can work great if you know how to use them. "Try applying your powder with a brush instead of a powder puff or sponge," recommends makeup artist Adam Breuchaud. "This will allow you to set your makeup with a lighter dusting of product as opposed to the more generous amounts of the brush's counterparts."
  3. Know Where to Apply Your Powder: Controlling shine for an oily complexion is all about knowing where to use powder. "I recommend only using the product in between eyebrows, around the sides of your nose and on your chin," explains makeup artist Toby Fleischman. "This way the rest of your face has a more natural sheen to it, and this creates a fresher look than an all-over matte face." She recommends using a translucent powder or primer on top of your makeup.
  4. Touch Up With Blotting Papers: Shine may be an inevitable part of your day, so know the best way to touch up your look. "My first go-to in this scenario is to remove the oil first before adding any more product to the face" Fleischman says. "Oil-blotting papers are perfect for this."
