Reader Reviews: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch SPF 30+

We asked some fine and upstanding members of society (aka our Reader Review Panel) to trial Neutrogena's Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunscreen ($17.99) for us. Here's what they thought of the lightweight SPF 30+ . . .

"I cannot put into words how much I love Neutrogena's range of sunscreens. As a pale person with oily/combination skin, sunscreen is a must but a huge problem in terms of greasiness. This one has a powder-dry type finish that leaves my skin looking matte. It doesn't weigh down my skin, and doesn't have an irritating smell. It spreads onto skin easily and goes on evenly, leaving my skin feeling soft. Because it's sheer and has a matte finish I found it works it really well as a primer on days when I'm out and about and need that protection. Now I can use a highlighter in summer without worrying!"

Yummii had this to say:

"This sunscreen was everything I expected it to be! It has a light weight feel, absorbed into my skin super fast and does not make me break out. Perfect for oily skin as it does not leave a greasy feeling, but rather leaves it looking matte and smooth. All this in a handy bottle makes it perfect for throwing it into my handbag. I will definitely be recommending this to my friends."

"I was pleasantly surprised with Neutrogena's Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen. Unlike many other sunscreens, I did not feel that wearing it was a chore. I loved that it does not have an overbearing sunscreen smell or require rigorous application to blend in. It goes on smoothly and quickly becomes invisible. The lotion is non-greasy and non-shiny, providing SPF 30+ UVA/UVB protection. My only concern is that while it's perfect for individual use, a pump lid sunscreen would be more suitable for a larger family. Overall Neutrogena has succeeded in providing a comfortable sunscreen lotion that I would recommend."

"This sunscreen was actually pretty darn good, and I’m picky with my sunscreens. True to its name, it dried to a matte soft effect on the skin, but was easy to apply as it did not dry immediately, and felt quite moisturising. For a chemical sunscreen, I’m impressed that it has the latest photo-stable broad-spectrum technology and I’m sure my skin was too! Applying makeup over was no problem, and there was no unpleasant smell. This gets a 9/10 from me—points off for no full ingredient listing on the package."

"Thanks BellaSugar for the opportunity to try the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen. Finally a lightweight sunscreen that was easy to apply and I could carry in my bag for re-application. I used the sunscreen daily as a primer under my foundation and was pleased with the matte finish on my skin. I love that this non-greasy sunscreen is water resistant and felt nice on my skin while swimming. A larger tube for all over body use might be better. Overall this is my favourite of the Neutrogena sunscreen range as it suits my lifestyle and the warmer climate I live in."

Keppers had this to say:

"It comes in a cute, purse size tube perfect for taking to the beach. This sunscreen works well at stopping sun damage and burning but I didn't really like the way it rubbed in. I found that you had to rub it in quite hard before it would absorb, I'm not sure if this is because of my dry skin or the formula. The sunscreen smell is quite light compared to other brands. I find the price to be my biggest negative though as RRP of $18 is a bit much for an 85ml tube that would last me less than a month. Thanks for the opportunity and I look forward to having the chance to review again in the future."

Biarose had this to say:

"This is the best face sunscreen I have ever used. It goes on really easily, feels great on straight away—no waiting for it to soak in—and looks just like a good moisturiser on the skin. Usually I avoid sunscreen application as it takes too long to settle and look ready to go, and I feel it is too clogging, even though my skin is dry—but this seems to agree with my skin so well I don't resist applying it at all. It seems to just last nicely on the skin really well, too, so I am very happy with it."

Here's what Nessabella thought of it:

"The first thing I noticed about this product was the fresh scent followed by the lightweight, non-greasy consistency of the product. Unfortunately I was not able to test the product as we have had storms up here for the past several days. What I did find is that it is easy to apply and did not require too much rubbing into the skin. It left my skin feeling very moisturised. I will be testing out this weekend, weather permitting. But so far, I have very impressed by this product. I have been looking for a sunscreen that is both moisturising and is non-greasy. This is looking like the winner."

Innyanga had this to say:

"As Melanoma is the third most common cancer in Australia, and UVA and UVB rays contribute to 90 percent of the symptoms of prematurely aged skin (wrinkles and fine lines), it doesn't make sense NOT to wear sunscreen. I've tried many sunscreens over many years, and always disliked the way they felt or looked on my skin, especially on my face and decolletage. As a result, I've tried to avoid the sun between 10am and 4pm or covered up. This isn't always practical, though. I was interested to put Neutrogena's new Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunscreen to the test and I'm glad to report it didn’t disappoint. I found Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch to be as Neutrogena's information describes: it's an easy-to-wear sunscreen, minus the greasy formula you find in most other sun protectors. It’s perfect for all skin types and works well under make-up or worn on its own. I like the way it disappears, leaving no whitish residue, and not a hint of oiliness. You really can't tell that you're wearing sunscreen at all. There's no tell-tale sunscreen fragrance either, which is a big plus. If I had to find fault, it would be that the lotion is rather thick, and not as easy to apply as thinner lotions. I find it's necessary to use numerous 'dots' to ensure adequate coverage, even on smaller areas. As a result, the 85ml tube may not go very far, so if you're a heavy sunscreen user, you might consider it a more expensive option. As I am not generally a heavy user, it's absolutely fine for me."

Edlie had this to say:

"This sunscreen is simply terrific. I've used it on my face and my body, on its own, mixed in with foundation, and it is the most effective and invisible sunscreen I've ever found. It has a matte finish and is not greasy, it rubs in and absorbs quickly and it doesn't leave that white cast on your skin that some other sunscreens do. It didn't irritate my super sensitive skin and most importantly it worked!! A great product and one I will definitely purchase."
