Tips on Covering Grey Hairs

Have a Few Grey Hairs? Here's What to Do About Them

At some point in your life, a grey hair (or two or three) is bound to pop up. It's your call whether to just go with it and let the greys shine, or use hair colour to help blend them away. But if you do choose the latter, exactly when is it time to head to the salon? "Go when it starts bothering you," says celebrity colourist Michael Canale, who counts stars such as Jennifer Aniston, Heidi Klum and Kyra Sedgwick among his clientele. Here are the rest of Canale's dos — and some don'ts — when covering up silver streaks.

DO create contrast: If you do choose the cover-up route, try highlights. "That's the best way," explains Canale. "You get a contrast effect going so that you can blend it away." Another benefit? You can go about two months without having to worry about a touch-up.

Keep reading . . .DO try a semipermanent: "To eliminate grey, start out with semipermanent hair colour," advises Canale. But instead of doing it all over, just apply it to areas that need it, such as the temples. Reapply once a month for optimum results.

DON'T lighten up: It may be tempting to go lighter overall in an effort to help blend away the grey, but try to resist the urge. "You don't really want to go lighter," says Canale. "If you start lightening it, then you only have about three to four weeks before you have a regrowth line." That means more touch-ups, more frequently.

DON'T feel like you have to cover the grey: "A lot of people come in with [just] three grey hairs," Canale quips. "But I'm a firm believer in pulling them out."
