Dr. Jill Biden chose emerging designer Markarian for the 2021 presidential inauguration in Washington DC. On Wednesday, Jan. 20, the new first lady of the United States chose to wear a dress and overcoat by the NYC-based brand for the historic moment, while Joe Biden opted for a Ralph Lauren suit. Dr. Biden’s custom outfit consisted of a matching coat and dress set made in an ocean blue, wool tweed with a matching silk Markarian face mask.

The coat came with a dark blue velvet collar and cuffs and was worn over a tapered dress that had a chiffon bodice and scalloped skirt. The neckline of the dress is actually hand embellished with Swarovski pearls and crystals in a delicate floral pattern. The same Swarovski crystals are also seen on the coat and dress. As for the color blue, it was chosen for the pieces to signify “trust, confidence, and stability,” according to the press release. She accessorized with Jimmy Choo pumps and a Tyler Ellis bag.

The outfit was carefully crafted by a small team in the heart of New York City’s Garment Center and hand finished by the designer Alexandra O’Neill in her West Village studio. The designer also stated she’s “incredibly humbled to be a small part of such a historic moment.” Read on to see the first lady wearing the outfit and see a sketch of the outfit ahead.
