The contamination is of serious concern as Papaw Ointment – considered to have gentle antimicrobial properties – is frequently used as a treatment for minor wounds. It is also considered a cult Australian lip product.

International celebrities like Lucy Hale and Natalie Portman, as well as locals like Cate Blanchett and Gemma Ward, are fans of the product.

The microorganisms that have been flagged are aspergillus tubingensis, sordaria humana, pencillium paneum and Paenibaccillus glucanolyticus.

While these moulds and bacteria pose minimal risk to consumers, they could be dangerous for immunocompromised individuals

If your product is from one of these batches you can access a refund by returning to the place of purchase or contacting Lucas’ Papaw Remedies Customer Service on 1800 861 852. If you have used the product recently and are showing signs of an adverse reaction, head to your GP or local hospital.
