Kate Bracks has taken out the title of MasterChef 2011! The mother-of-three from Orange, NSW, beat Michael Weldon after three cooking challenges, earning a score of 87 out of 100 from the judges. She was trailing behind Michael after the first mystery box challenge, where she plated up a Balmain bug and crab remoulade salad. For the second challenge, a ‘Best Dish of Your Life’ invention test, she edged ahead with a beautiful sherry-glazed quail dish that displayed a heap of techniques she had learned throughout the series. Finally, the pressure test saw Kate and Michael recreating ‘The Snowman’ by guest chef Rene Redzepi from Noma in Copenhagen. It’s the most difficult dish off the Noma menu and involved many different elements and techniques: a vinegar meringue, carrot sorbet, passionfruit mousse and yoghurt granita. While the judges were impressed with Michael’s desserts, at the end of the day Kate served up the better dish, leading to her MasterChef victory! Her prize includes a cookbook deal, $100,000 cash and training at some of Australia’s best restaurants. Congratulations, Kate! And a big well done to Michael, too!
