This Week on POPSUGAR Rush: The 1st Annual POPSUGAR Rush Awards

At the time of writing, there are just 39 days left until 2024. Gagged. Gooped. Gooned. It has truly been a wild year for pop culture, and it has been an honour to cover the latter third of it on the very first season of POPSUGAR Rush. Starr and I have enjoyed nothing more than sitting down each week and having a chinwag about the weird nooks and crannies of reality TV, streaming and celebrity that you’re too nervous to do yourself — and in bite-sized deliciousness. Where else would you have learned about when Robbie Williams couldn’t trust a fart, or P!nk’s least favourite song of hers being “We’ve Got Scurvy”? You’re welcome.

But, this week marks the final episode of POPSUGAR Rush’s first-ever season. Instead of wallowing in our collective sadness, Starr and I put our little heads together and conjured the best possible send-off: the inaugural POPSUGAR Rush awards!

Yes, seven categories dedicated to those pop culture moments that made us laugh, cry and sh*rt throughout the year. These are not your typical categories, either. We wanted to get into the nitty-gritty, rewarding only those moments that really deserve it. The categories of the 1st ever-POPSUGAR Rush Awards are:

  • Jawbreaker of the Year
  • Best Taylor Swift Moment That We Didn’t Already Discuss on POPSUGAR Rush
  • Best Australian Streaming Serve
  • Nepo Baby of the Year
  • Best Couple That Survived Divorce-a-geddon
  • Rush of the Year

You’ll have to tune into POPSUGAR Rush to find out the nominees and winners in full. But, for now, here’s a breakdown of some of the moments that truly made pop culture in 2023

The Biggest Pop Culture Moments of 2023

Ariana DeBose’s BAFTA Rap

One rap to rule them all, celebrating the best in acting performances from 2022. After being memed to death and back, one thing is for certain: Angela Bassett did the thing.

Barbenheimer

He was a scientist who was responsible for creating one of the most devastating weapons of mass destruction in history. She was a doll who wanted to be a real girl. They both pondered what it means to be human. Can I make it any more obvious?

The release of Barbie and Oppenheimer on the same day caused a worldwide cultural phenomenon. Barbie became one of the highest-grossing films of all time, and Oppenheimer — a 3-hour, historical biopic — found an audience it never intended to and has almost grossed $1 billion at the global box office. We owe Barbenheimer so much.

Divorceageddon

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner. Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Jackman. Britney Spears and Sam Asghari. Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello. Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez. It seemed like no celebrity couple was spared (unless you’re Posh and Becks or Bey and Jay-Z, be safe out there).

The Eras Tour and The Renaissance Tour

Leave it to the two biggest musicians in the world to help revive stadium touring in a bigger way than either of them could have predicted. Taylor Swift and Beyoncé were already legends, but now, they’re essentially deities.

Scandoval

You don’t even have to be a Vanderpump Rules fan to know all about Scandoval. When it was revealed that Tom Sandoval cheated on his girlfriend of a decade, Ariana Madix, with her best friend, Raquel Leviss, and the Internet was never the same.
