The opening gala of the Sydney Film Festival was held last night at the State Theatre, and Cate Blanchett was on hand to help with the festivities as her new movie, Hanna, was the opening film. During the cinema event, which runs until June 19, movie fans will be able to watch buzzed-about films such as The Tree of Life, Kung Fu Panda 2, Elizabeth Olsen’s Martha Marcy May Marlene and Michelle Williams’ Meek’s Cutoff before their theatrical release. Cate stars in the Joe Wright-directed thriller opposite Saoirse Ronan and Eric Bana, but her co-stars were unable to attend the Sydney event. Others who braved the cold include Jessica Tovey, Sophie Lowe, Todd Lasance, Phoebe Tonkin and April Rose Pengilly.
