Andy Whitfield passed away on Sunday morning from non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in Sydney. He was 39. The Welsh actor was known for playing the title role in the Starz TV show Spartacus: Blood and Sand. In a statement, his wife Vashti said he was a “beautiful young soldier” who died on a “sunny Sydney day” in the “arms of his loving wife.”
Andy was diagnosed with cancer in March 2010 and immediately started treatment in New Zealand, where Spartacus is filmed. Two months later he said he was cancer-free, but his illness returned and in September 2010 it was announced that he wouldn’t be returning to the show. His role was taken over by Australian actor Liam McIntyre. During his time in Sydney, Andy appeared on shows such as Packed to the Rafters, All Saints and McLeod’s Daughters.
