Baz Luhrmann’s 1992 hit movie Strictly Ballroom is finally making its way to the stage. It was announced yesterday that Strictly Ballroom The Musical will have its grand debut in April 2014 at the Sydney Lyric Theatre, with previews starting in March. The stage event has been in the works for a while, and reunites the creative team behind the film that turned Paul Mecurio (Scott) and Tara Morice (Fran) into stars: co-writer/director Luhrmann, his set and costume designer wife Catherine Martin, choreographer John “Cha Cha” O’Connell, and co-writer Craig Pierce. The musical was actually delayed because three of the team, Luhrmann, Martin and Pierce, were held up with The Great Gatsby.
The search is still on for two stars to fill the lead roles, and producers are mainly looking at Australians for Scott and Fran, even though the net has been cast internationally as well. Luhrmann also said that the focus of the musical will be on perfecting the acting and dances as opposed to big, extravagant special effects. With news of the musical on the way, let’s revisit the trailer for the movie.
