The coaches of The Voice, Seal, Delta Goodrem, Keith Urban and Joel Madden, were joined by their respective contestants Karise Eden, Rachael Leahcar, Darren Percival and Sarah De Bono at a media conference in Sydney today. Last night the coaches picked the singers who will compete on Sunday night’s grand final, with the winner announced on Monday. Each international artist will also perform a duet with their charge on Monday night once the voting lines have closed. A few people on the panel were under the weather today — Rachael has lost her voice, and Karise struggled a bit — but they were all in good spirits ahead of the upcoming finale. Here’s some of what the stars of The Voice had to say:

  • Keith on the fan reaction to the show: “I’m glad everybody has gravitated towards it in such a passionate way. I’d much rather people intensely hate something than be indifferent to it, and I certainly continue to run into people who are very passionate about their opinions of who should go through. On one hand, we’re not supposed to be ‘judges’, we’re supposed to be ‘coaches’, but we do judge. We judged last night. We judge when we have to make a decision on someone — that’s a fact. But what’s also a fact is that if you make art, and make it available for sale, you are offering up art to be judged, by someone who decides they like it and want to buy it, or someone who’s indifferent to it or doesn’t like it. It’s going to be judged by everybody, not just us. But judging it doesn’t make it right or wrong . . . What I would ask all the artists is, if someone likes it, is indifferent, or doesn’t like it, how do those three people affect the way you keep making art?”
  • Joel on dealing with negative criticism: “The feedback you need to listen to are the people who learn to trust, and to a large extent you should always listen to your fans. The people who are buying your music and coming to your shows, their opinion does matter to me. The outside noise is always going to be there — people are always going to have something to say, good or bad. You have to take it with a grain of salt. For me, you always have to respect the people that are deciding if you should still be on the stage, because ultimately everything we do is decided by the people.”
