While most teenagers try alcohol for the first time around the age of 18, for singer Delta Goodrem, her first experience came almost ten years later.

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph on Thursday, the 36-year-old revealed that because she had worked from such a young age, “it wasn’t until my late twenties that I finally started to have my teenage years.”

“I had so much going on in my teens there wasn’t really the space to have a few drinks and have my friends look after me. But in my late twenties, I had that period of self-discovery, things had started to get a bit much for me around that time.”

Her new single Billionaire, which was released on Thursday, March 19, begins with the line: “I didn’t drink ’til I was twenty-seven / The day I went to numb the pain inside me,” and is an autobiographical account of her journey.

Last week, Goodrem, who was most recently a judge on Channel 9’s iteration of The Voice until it moved to Channel 7, was forced to push back her indoor arena tour from April to September and October.

“I was thankful people understood it was a huge responsibility to do a national arena tour right now,” Goodrem told the outlet.

“We’re on course in Australia, it’s great there’s outdoor gigs happening but I just want everybody to feel safe so it’s the best experience. After doing shows from my living room the idea of everyone being together in one space is still the light at the end of the tunnel I’m looking forward to.”

Goodrem then called it “dangerous” to give her more time to work on the show because “before you know it I’ll be flying across the arena! My mind is very active thinking about this tour”.
