Frances McDormand Takes Home the 2021 Best Actress Oscar for Nomadland

If there is one thing we love at POPSUGAR Australia, it’s celebrating talented women.

At the 93rd Academy Awards, the Best Actress category was truly a celebration of incredible females, with a wonderful cross-section of performers up for the prestigious award.

Frances McDormand took home the gold for her amazing performace in Nomadland.

The competition was fierce this year with several of the 2021 nominees having been recognised in previous years.

Frances McDormand, nominated this year for Nomadland, has been nominated five times before and won for 1996’s Fargo and 2018’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

Viola Davis, who was recognised for her performance in Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, has previously won for 2016’s Fences.

Andra Day, up for the award for The United States vs. Billie Holiday, is a first time nominee. She has garnered widespread acclaim for her portrayal of the legendary jazz singer.

Carey Mulligan undoubtedly delivered one of the most important #MeToo era performances as Cassie in Promising Young Woman. Mulligan, who was previously nominated for 2009’s An Education, offered up a searing portrayal of a woman who, haunted by unimaginable trauma, embarks on a mission of revenge in her best friends honour.

And Vanessa Kirby — who you no doubt recognise from The Crown — scored a nomination for her heartbreaking performance in Pieces of a Woman. The film explores a year of grieving by a young woman, after experiencing an unthinkable tragedy during her homebirth.
