The cause of Andre Braugher’s death has been revealed as lung cancer, as confirmed by his publicist to The Hollywood Reporter. Braugher passed away on Monday at the age of 61, following what was initially described by his representative as a “brief illness.”

The two-time Emmy-winning star is best known for his iconic roles in television series like “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Homicide: Life on the Street”.

For many of us, Braugher was the deadpan genius behind Captain Raymond Holt in “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”. Who could forget his stone-faced, yet hilarious, moments opposite Andy Samberg’s Jake Peralta? Over the course of eight seasons, he not only became a fan favourite but also garnered critical acclaim, winning two Critics’ Choice Awards for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and receiving four Emmy Award nominations.

Andre Braugher Had a Distinguished Career

Beyond the realm of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”, Andre Braugher had a distinguished career, showcasing his acting prowess in a variety of roles. His Emmy-winning portrayal of Detective Frank Pembleton in “Homicide: Life on the Street” solidified his status as a seasoned and highly respected actor. Braugher’s talent was further exemplified in projects such as “Men of a Certain Age”, “The Good Fight”, and the recent drama film “She Said”, where he starred alongside Carey Mulligan.

Andre Braugher leaves behind a legacy that extends beyond the screen. He is survived by his wife, actress Ami Brabson, and their three sons, Michael, Isiah, and John.

Co-Stars Share Emotional Tributes

Not long after the news broke of Andre’s sudden death, his “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” co-stars began sharing emotional tributes.

Joe Lo Truglio, who plays Charles Boyle on the show, remembered the late star as “committed and passionate” on Instagram.

“So many wonderful stories will be told about Andre but for now, all my love goes to his wife Ami and his three boys, who he loved very much and flew back every weekend from the show to be with,” he wrote.

“We all know how powerful an actor he was, but even more, Andre knew exactly well his most important role and was deeply proud of it. He spoke often about his sons, and knew how lucky he was to have Ami. I’m grateful to them for allowing us to share eight years with him. He was committed and passionate about the things he loved. And that voice. It laid anchor to the roughest of dialogue… I miss him so much already. What an honour to work with a man who knew what it was really all about. I feel blessed and thankful. Miss you Capt Holt. Love, Porkchop.”

“You Left Us Too Soon”

Terry Crews, Braugher’s character’s second-in-command Sergeant Terry Jeffords, said his co-star was gone “so soon”.

“I’m honoured to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent. This hurts,” Crews wrote alongside an image of Braugher. “You left us too soon. You taught me so much. I will be forever grateful for the experience of knowing you. Thank you for your wisdom, your advice, your kindness and your friendship. Deepest condolences to your wife and family in this difficult time. You showed me what a life well lived looks like… Rest In Peace, Andre. I love you, man.”

Meanwhile, Marc Evan Jackson, his on-screen husband, shared a sweet portrait of the actor, writing simply: “O Captain. My Captain.”

Dirk Blocker, who portrayed Detective Michael Hitchcock, said: “Fiercely intelligent, remarkably kind, supportive, generous and possessed a deep and extraordinary talent, and had even more to offer.”

He continued: “I am devastated. I love him. The 9 years I was able to work with him and to just be in his presence was truly a blessing. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family.”

The offical “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” Instagram page also paid tribute to the late star.

“Always our Captain. We love you, Andre,” it read.
