MasterChef Australia 2021 has given its contestants some intense challenges this season — from mastering Nigella Lawson’s rhubarb meringue cake without a recipe to Yotam Ottolenghi’s three-course flavour bomb challenge.

It’s all part of superstar week on the reality cooking show, with a few celebrity chefs still to come. One of those is none other than the legendary Massimo Bottura — author of five books and owner of Osteria Francescan in Moderna, Italy which casually boasts three Michelin stars.

You might think that, given Bottura’s standing in the culinary community, he’d be tasking the MasterChef contestants with creating the ultimate fine dining experience… but you’d be wrong.

On deck, instead, is the challenge to serve up the best bowl of mac and cheese the judges have ever tasted and can we just say, we have never been more envious of Melissa, Jock and Andy in our lives.

The members of the grey team will be taking part in the challenge, having placed last in Ottolenghi’s pressure test and at the end of the night, one MasterChef hopeful will be sent home (although with the perfect comfort food recipe to ease their sorrows).

In 2020, Bottura offered home chefs the ultimate cooking experience with his Instagram series Kitchen QuarantineHere’s hoping the current MasterChef proteges were watching as in one of the episodes, Bottura demonstrated the art of crafting an “everything Mac and Cheese” dinner. The virtual series earned the already celebrated chef a 2020 Webby Special Achievement Award for his efforts.

If your mouth is watering at the thought of such deliciousness then a. you’re not alone and b. we’ve got you covered with the recipe below. Enjoy!
