Yoga is a great complementary exercise for the runner as it improves mobility, particularly in the hips, which is really important if you're using your lower body a lot. Yoga also strengthens and develops muscles that will help to improve your running performance, and muscle burns fat. So the stronger and healthier your muscles are, the more calories you will burn.
So how many calories burned in a yoga class? Well you might be suprised at just how good one 60 minute session can be. Based on a 65kg woman, you can burn approximately 566 calories in Vinyasa, 454 calories in Bikram, 334 calories in Ashtanga, and 180 calories for a Hatha class — pretty impressive, right?
So, aside from the many health benefits of yoga, from cardiovascular health, digestive health, musculoskeletal to a happy and healthy mind, it is also a great way to lose weight! It's important to remember if you are burning of a lot of calories in a day and training for an upcoming marathon, you should definitely be balancing your intake correctly.
