The Lone Ranger Trailer: When Depp and Hammer Are Men in Masks

The times, they are a-changin' for folks in the Wild West.

The times, they are a-changin' for folks in the Wild West. The trailer for The Lone Ranger depicts a world in the process of being altered forever with the advent of the railroad. Men will no longer be at the mercy of their horses to take them to far places, and with this epic invention comes crime the likes of which people have never seen. Enter peacekeeper John Reid, aka The Lone Ranger (Armie Hammer). Guided by his sidekick, Tonto (Johnny Depp), he vows to protect his native land and keep criminals at bay.

The Lone Ranger character has been portrayed in several movies and series, but I was hoping to get a few more details about Gore Verbinski's retelling. What I can tell you is that there are bandits, ladies — specifically, Helena Bonham Carter — fast-moving trains, Johnny Depp dangerously clinging to the bottom of those fast-moving trains, and saloons. The movie comes out July 4, and you can watch the trailer after the jump.

Johnny Depp was welcomed to NYC on Friday night by a crowd of fans who came out to get a glimpse of the star at a Barnes & Noble bookstore in Union Square. He was in LA earlier this week then travelled to the East Coast to support friend and author Damien Echols' new book, Life After Death. Nichols, a former death row inmate, was part of the West Memphis Three, who were recently released from prison after wrongfully serving 18 years. This isn't the first time Johnny stepped out to support Nichols: he traveled to Canada just last month for the TIFF premiere of West of Memphis. While Johnny was spending time in the Big Apple, a tragedy occurred on the set of his new film, The Lone Ranger — a crew member died after he was found unresponsive in a large tank while prepping for an underwater scene.

Johnny Depp Talks Tattoos as He Supports West of Memphis at TIFF

Johnny Depp waved to the crowd at the Toronto International Film Festival yesterday.

Johnny Depp waved to the crowd at the Toronto International Film Festival yesterday. He was there supporting West of Memphis, which examines the case of three men later named the "West Memphis Three," who were wrongly convicted of homicide and finally let out of prison last year after 18 years behind bars. Johnny, along with the Dixie Chicks' Natalie Maines and Eddie Vedder, was among the stars who helped pay the legal fees to free the men. Johnny has become close with one of the accused, Damien Echols, and the duo apparently share matching tattoos. Johnny revealed during a press conference yesterday that the ink on the right side of his chest was designed by Damien and is "one of my all-time favourites, and it means quite a lot to me."
