Idris Elba Escapes from Prison in the New Trailer For Netflix’s “Luther: The Fallen Sun”

Calling all “Luther” fans, the countdown is officially on for the return of Idris Elba to our screens. On Feb. 9, Netflix released the trailer for the upcoming film, which is a continuation of the hit BBC drama, and it looks as though we’re in for one hell of a ride. “Luther: The Fallen Sun” sees Luther, played by Elba, break out of prison to capture a cyber psychopath who is terrorizing London, but in typical form, the magnitude of the task becomes his obsession.
It’s been four years since we last saw the gritty DCI John Luther, but there won’t be long to wait until we get our crime drama fix. The film is premiering in selected theaters on Feb. 24, before being released on the streaming platform on March 10.
The BBC show first aired in 2010 and ran for five seasons, with Elba playing the rough-around-the-edges detective. His job always came first, often at the expense of his personal life. The series soon became a huge success, so it is no wonder a film was greenlit, especially since the show’s ending was shrouded in mystery.
For those in need of a quick “Luther” refresher, the series ended with a passionate confrontation between Luther and Alice (played by Ruth Wilson) – a serial killer and his occasional romantic interest. Alice had previously been presumed dead but returned to the show to cause more trouble for the detective. At the end of the series she seemingly met her end again, even though her lifeless body quickly disappeared. Luther then found himself arrested, with viewers being left in the dark about what happened next.
Elba, who is married to Sabrina, won a Golden Globe for his stellar performance as Luther in 2012 and has since starred in films including “Suicide Squad,” “Beast,” and the “Avengers” films, as well as regularly performing as a DJ. His name has also cropped up in multiple conversations about Daniel Craig’s replacement as James Bond, although nothing has been confirmed.

Elba will be joined by two-time Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo, who is also starring in the upcoming “Wicked” film, and Bafta winner Andy Serkis, known for the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.
The trailer shows Erivo seemingly playing a rival detective while Serkis plays the villain. Dermot Crowley also reprises the role of Martin Schenk. While it doesn’t look as though Wilson returns, we can’t help but yearn for all of the drama she would bring.

Netflix (which is making the film alongside the BBC) has revealed the logline, explaining that it will be “an epic continuation of the Luther saga”. It continues by explaining the film will kick off where the TV series was left. It reads, “a gruesome serial killer is terrorizing London while brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther sits behind bars. Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary.”

Emmy nominee Jamie Payne (“The Alienist”) directs the feature from a script by series creator and writer, Neil Cross. One thing we do know for sure is that the scenes are set to be bigger and better than ever before. “Having delivered every episode of Luther on budgets which are comically small, [we’ve been able] to have a wider canvas and a bigger budget to tell the kind of stories that we’ve always wanted to be able to tell,” Cross told the Radio Times in September 2021. “And we’ve really been given the opportunity – while staying entirely true.”
