Fashion Week: Top 10 Colour Trends from MBFWA

The runways were awash in fresh hues at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, bringing welcome respite from the khaki/black/Bordeaux/navy of the A/W palette we've become so accustomed to.

The runways were awash in fresh hues at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, bringing welcome respite from the khaki/black/Bordeaux/navy of the A/W palette we've become so accustomed to. The Spring/Summer season traditionally signals the return to colour, but this season a definitive palette emerged from the catwalk. Bold, almost paintbox-bright tones of cobalt, marigold and fuchsia replaced last season's ubiquitous neon brights and pastels were back, albeit in powdered-back incarnations of sky blue, peppermint and the palest of pinks.

Of course there was black and white, but that (as we detailed in our mega-trend round-up) was worn almost exclusively together, and as part of a broader mod-inspired trend. A new set of go-to neutrals emerged with a modern, almost sci-fi edge; white (often worn head to toe), navy blue and high-shine silver provided crisp contrast to the vibrant brights or pretty watercolour hues. True, the temperature might be in decline but advance notice is always a handy thing! Get acquainted with the colours that are set to define the new season.

If you have a thing for bags and shoes, have we got a treat for you! We've painstakingly gone through our runway round-ups from Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia with a fine tooth comb to pick out the very best new season shoes and bags from the Spring/Summer offerings. Many local designers out-sourced their accessories to chain store brands this year, which is great news if you want to make these runway wheels yours!

Tony Bianco provided those killer lace-up boots for Alex Perry, as well the 'Cambridge' wheels for Camilla and Marc, the 'Dice' and 'Libby' heels at Ellery, the 'Lolita' pumps at Toni Maticevski, the 'Ashley' platforms at Rebecca Vallance and the ankle-strapped heels for Bec & Bridge. ASOS was all over the catwalks too, supplying Christopher Esber with his 'Hostage' heels, Talulah with their flirty tie-up sandals and We Are Handsome with their metallic 'Hackney' stilettos. And those fantastical Romance Was Born creations? They came courtesy of Shoes of Prey. It's time to let your fingers do the walking. . .

2013 MBFWA: Alice McCall

Alice McCall's obessesion with positive and negative space continues to play out, this season taking a dive under the waves in an under-the-sea themed collection — drawing on the cursive shapes of Art Nouveau jewellery (that of Rene Jules Lalique, to be precise) and the intricate botanical illustrations of Ernst Haekel.

Alice McCall's obessesion with positive and negative space continues to play out, this season taking a dive under the waves in an under-the-sea themed collection  drawing on the cursive shapes of Art Nouveau jewellery (that of Rene Jules Lalique, to be precise) and the intricate botanical illustrations of Ernst Haekel. Jewellery, botany and the ocean may seem far flung inspiration sources, but thanks to Alice's expert way with applique, cut-out lace work and custom-printing it was a cohesive and inspiring vision that emerged from her Spring/Summer '13-'14 collection. Sheer cotton voile, double Japanese organza and silk were used to give a lightness to sculptural, transparent layers acted like pretty outershells —  weighted only by delicate tentace-like beading, or solid luxurious leather. The distinctive graphics vascilated between the obscenely pretty and the almost anatomically correct — the light and dark of the linework highlighted in contasting shades of navy, white, orange and oyster grey. Overtly feminine frills on shell tops, trumpet skirts and silk joggers were made oversized and sculptural to stave off frivolity. Alice, don't come up for air just yet.

  • Colours: White, cream, pale peach, orange, navy, gold, smoke and oyster greys.
  • Trends: Sheer, oversized shapes, pleating, navy, metallic tweed, flares, trumpet skirts, frills and crop tops.
  • Key Looks: Cut-work illustrated leather shell tops in navy and white, sheer sunray pleated mini-dressses than fanned out from the waist, frill-edged jogger shorts and tunic tops and maxi dresses with oversized applique and cut-work bodices.
  • Accessories: Chunky, disco-floor ready gold and silver wedges spliced with snakeskin.

A First Look at the 2013 Fashion Week Schedule

The international fashion weeks are done and dusted, which means it's time to turn our attention back to local designers for our own week of new season style.

The international fashion weeks are done and dusted, which means it's time to turn our attention back to local designers for our own week of new season style. Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia (try saying that three times fast whilst balancing an SLR and gulping down a skim latte), is a mere 26 sleeps away, and given fashion week's new digs in Redfern we're mighty intrigued to see how the industry — ourselves included — will cope with the change. The schedule is looking a little different this year too, with noticeable gaps left by Zimmermann (waaaaaah), Dion Lee (nooooo), Josh Goot (sniff) and Magdalena Valevska (say it ain't so).

However... Alex Perry is back, as is Zambesi after ten years playing away games. Camilla and Marc will open proceedings on Monday morning  commemorating their tenth anniversary in the biz, while the usually reclusive Easton Pearson duo will stand under the spotlight thanks to a Mercedes Benz Presents show. Fresh fashion week faces are set to include Vanishing Elephant, Staple the Label and Serpent & the Swan, while  thankfully  rising stars Christopher Esber, Michael Lo Sordo and Watson X Watson will be back on deck.

2012 Melbourne Cup Day: Jessica McNamee

Packed to the Rafters-alumn Jessica McNamee looked as cute as a button bow at today's Melbourne Cup.

Packed to the Rafters-alumn Jessica McNamee looked as cute as a button bow at today's Melbourne Cup. Her turquoise two-strap heels were the perfect match for her colourful Alice McCall S/S '13 shift, but we have to hand it to her hairdresser for really taking the cake with that bow-topped 'do. Love it, or loathe it?
