Awards season is heating up!

Awards season is heating up! The Spirit Awards were announced overnight, giving us the first batch of nominees in what's already shaping up to be an exciting race. Though the Spirit Awards honour independent film, there are lots of movies on this list that will probably make it all the way to the Oscars, like Silver Linings Playbook and Moonrise Kingdom. There are also a few surprises, like the fun ones (Matthew McConaughey for best supporting male in Magic Mike!) and the sweet ones (The Perks of Being a Wallflowerfor best first feature).

The Spirit Awards air on Saturday, Feb. 23, and you can see the full list of the nominees after the jump.

Michelle Williams, who won for My Week With Marilyn and is also up for best actress at the Oscars, hung out with pal Busy Philipps inside the event and talked about prepping for the iconic role in the press room. The Artist was the big winner of the night, taking home four honours, including best picture and best actor for Jean Dujardin. Zac Efron joined the fun wearing Lanvin, while presenter Elizabeth Banks paused backstage for a photo op with Rashida Jones, and nominee Jessica Chastain chatted with Rosario Dawson. We're in the home stretch of awards season, but before the Oscars close things out, Hollywood honoured some of the best in independent films with the Spirit Awards.

We're in the home stretch of awards season, but before the Oscars close things out, Hollywood honoured some of the best in independent films with the Spirit Awards. Christopher Plummer continued to sweep the best supporting actor category for Beginners, while Shailene Woodley got her first win for her work in The Descendants. Oscar nominees Jean Dujardin and Michelle Williams both got an early boost from Spirit wins as well. The Artist was the biggest winner of the night, taking home four awards, including best feature.

The purple carpet at yesterday's Independent Spirit Awards in LA was star-studded. Celebs gathered to honour the year's best in independent movie-making, just one day before the culmination of awards season at the Oscars — it kicks off very soon, so make sure you check back as we bring you live coverage of the event!

Many of the ladies chose simple outfits for yesterday's event. Michelle Williams went with a Louis Vuitton shorts suit, while Jessica Chastain, nominated for her work in Take Shelter, wore a similar Armani dress. Elizabeth Olsen wore white Antonio Berardi, and Kirsten Dunst, representing Melancholia, wore a Dolce & Gabbana LBD with a white blazer. Shailene Woodley, an early winner, went casual in jeans and a patterned top.

Others like Olivia Wilde and Elizabeth Banks opted for colourful prints. Zoe Saldana showed leg in a floral Balmain dress, while Busy Philipps was retro in baby blue and Kate Beckinsale rocked a jumpsuit. Many handsome men also showed their faces, including Zac Efron, Matthew Bomer and Chris Pine. Ian Somerhalder and Alexander Skarsgård also suited up to pose for photos. She's made the awards show rounds so far this year on behalf of her breakout role in Martha Marcy May Marlene. Elizabeth was up for the best female lead honour at today's ceremony, but lost out to Michelle Williams. Her movie was also up for best first feature for director Sean Durkin, but that category went to the team behind Margin Call.

The Artist and Take Shelter lead the pack with five nominations apiece. Right behind it was Drive, which picked up four nods, including one for leading man Ryan Gosling. The Descendants also scored four nominations, though George Clooney was left off the list this time.
