James Stewart Quits Packed to the Rafters to Focus on Baby With Jessica Marais

Packed to the Rafters is losing another cast favourite: James Stewart. His pregnant fiancée Jessica Marais is apparently ready to give birth any day now, and the actor has decided to take a step back from his career to care for the baby so Jessica can continue working on her US show Magic City. James told TV Week, “The show will go into a sixth season, but I’ve done a few years, so I might be ready to hang up my boots. I just can’t wait to be a dad and that’s my priority right now. We’re moving to America not long after the baby is born — probably three or four weeks. It’s a pretty massive deal, but we have to do it.” A spokeswoman for Channel Seven said the network supported James’ decision “with all our love and support.” James’ news comes less than a week after it was revealed that co-star Hugh Sheridan is deflecting to Network Ten to host the new talent-finding show I Will Survive. Hugh will still appear in a limited number of Rafters’ new episodes.

It looks like Channel Seven's stable of stars will be have to rely on their own styling skills when they walk this year's red carpet at the Logie Awards. According to the The Sydney Morning Herald, the television network will not be providing the usual "army" of stylists to ensure their celebrity nominees land on best dressed lists. A Channel Seven representative defended the decision, saying "We either had to cut how many people we sent to the Logies or find savings elsewhere, and we did not want to deny anyone the chance of going.'' The move may save substantial costs on couriers, insurance and stylist fees, but the standard of style on show may suffer. Esther Anderson and Jessica Marais both did their network proud last year but we have to wonder if their frocks will be as fab, sans-stylists. Jessica Marais has returned home to Australia with an added glow, thanks to her pregnancy with her first child. The former Packed to the Rafters actress is here as part of her duties as an ambassador for Linney jewellers, the company that also designed her engagement ring. Jess, who is loved-up and engaged to James Stewart, sat down with the Daily Telegraph to talk about life as a new expectant mother, and admitted that falling pregnant wasn’t ideal time-wise, as it coincided with her plans to launch a Hollywood career.

Jessica said, “When we found out, that was an issue. But I found that just about every other actress who has had a child and works tells you it can be done and that there is never the perfect time. So we are embracing what we have and looking towards the future with bright eyes.” Jess recently wrapped the first season of her US show Magic City, and said she’ll go back to America to work on a second season if it’s picked up. For now, she and James will stay here until their baby is born.

Jessica Marais is pregnant! The Australian actress’ management confirmed the exciting news this morning: “James Stewart and Jessica Marais announce they are expecting their first child. The couple are excited and looking forward to this next phase of their lives.” Jessica and her fiancé James, who met on the set of Packed to the Rafters, have been the subjects of pregnancy rumours the past few weeks after they sat down together for a cute interview with Sunday Night, in which they both expressed their desire to start a family. Jess left Rafters, the show that made her an Aussie household name, earlier this year to pursue a Hollywood career, and soon landed a role on the new Miami-based series Magic City. She is reportedly returning to the country at the end of the month. Congrats to Jess and James!

Ready to see another side of Jessica Marais? The Aussie actress left her Packed to the Rafters family in February (her last episode aired in August) to try her luck in the US, and she soon landed a role on a 10-part series called Magic City on the US network Starz. A preview for the ’60s crime drama set in Miami has been released, giving us the first glimpse of Jessica as a sexy, siren-type character. But don’t be surprised if you don’t recognise her — she’s got dark hair! In the clip she emerges from a pool in a little white bikini, and her character, Lily Diamond, looks set to break hearts. The show also stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan and former Bond girl Olga Kurylenko. Are you interested to see Jess play a completely different role, or will she always be Rachel Rafter to you?
