MasterChef 2013 Launches With a Fun, Food-Filled Melbourne Party

Current and former stars of MasterChef gathered with Network Ten executives, talent and media to launch the 2013 series at the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds, where the new kitchen is located, last night.

Current and former stars of MasterChef gathered with Network Ten executives, talent and media to launch the 2013 series at the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds, where the new kitchen is located, last night. Judges Matt Preston, Gary Mehigan and a slimline George Calombaris goofed around with the girls vs. boys signs that represented the show’s new weekly themed format — yesterday Gary told us how the battle of the sexes theme, which has been featured prominently in the MasterChef promos (and drawn some criticism), sets up future themes, like Italian week, Middle Eastern week and the like. Some of those themes also had dedicated food stations around the kitchen, like a stall filled with cartoon-like desserts to represent Kids week.

Last year’s winner Andy Allen mingled with 2011 series favourite Hayden Quinn, while Chrissie Swan made the event a mother-daughter affair by bringing her two-month-old baby, Peggy, along for the child-friendly night. The new group of contestants were also on hand for the launch — you can get to know them when MasterChef returns to TV on Sunday night.

Rhys Badcock Is the Winner of MasterChef: The Professionals!

Rhys Badcock has been crowned the inaugural winner of Australia’s MasterChef: The Professionals.

Rhys Badcock has been crowned the inaugural winner of Australia’s MasterChef: The Professionals. The announcement was made at the end of last night’s grand finale episode. The 29-year-old head chef, who splits his time between Byron Bay and Broome, beat his fellow grand finalists Sarah Knights and Rhett Willis to the title, $200,000 cash and a trip around the world that will give him the opportunity to cook in some of the best kitchens.

The winner was decided after three intense rounds. In round one, Momofuku chef/founder David Chang shaped the Reinvention Test when the contestants had to choose three of his favourite ingredients to create a dish with — a random knife draw meant their ingredients were miso, eggs and chicken. Hosts and judges Matt Preston and Marco Pierre White weren’t overly impressed with the dishes they were presented with, but they loved Rhett’s presentation and gave him the early lead.

After months of positive buzz thanks to a successful debut at the Cannes Film Festival that included a 10-minute standing ovation, the leading ladies of The Sapphires finally had the opportunity to screen the Australian film for family and friends when it opened the Melbourne International Film Festival last night. Jessica Mauboy, Deborah Mailman, Shari Sebbens and Miranda Tapsell frocked up for the red carpet event and posed for some photos with the women they portray in the movie. Jessica said they were more nervous about showing the musical to loved ones than an international audience: “I guess for us four girls, too, we’re just really waiting to see the reaction of our family, their faces.” Inside the cinema, the girls took front row seats. Other guests at the opening night of MIFF included Geoffrey Rush, Matt Preston and Melissa Bergland. The Sapphires opens Aug. 9.

MasterChef 2012 Scoop From Matt Preston: Changes, Social Media and Jamie Oliver

MasterChef returns for 2012 on Network Ten this Sunday night.

MasterChef returns for 2012 on Network Ten this Sunday night. After complaints about last year’s series — impossible challenges and unrelated guests stars (the Dalai Lama), to name a couple — the popular food show is going ‘back to basics,’ back to the show people fell in love with in its inaugural season. So what does it mean for 2012? The contestants are hardcore foodies, the Mystery Box and Invention Tests are back on Sundays, and Jamie Oliver is making an appearance. We spoke to judge Matt Preston about how the show has changed and also got him to dish on what a typical day on his plate is like!

This series has been promoted as going ‘back to basics.’ How did you feel about last year’s series?
I loved last year’s series. Restaurant magazine in London just announced the top 50 restaurants — last year we had the number one chef in the world, number three, number six, we’ve had number five. We had the best chefs in the world, chefs who don’t do other reality shows. They’ve done ours because this show has a great reputation for respecting food and people who cook it, and wanting to put the best chefs on it. It’s very hard when you’ve done those kinds of guys — René Redzepi, Thomas Keller, David Chang, Heston Blumenthal — it’s very hard to go from that — and the Dalai Lama — you can’t go any bigger. So you’ve kind of gotta go the other way, take it back to basics. It’s really about taking it home. We want to make the focus on achievable food. I love to see what our contestants are going to do with beef mince, or if you give them a banana bread challenge, what will they do? Also, Sunday nights, which used to have the mystery box and invention test, we’ve brought that back. One of the things that was missing from the show [last year] was the discussion around the TV going, ‘What would you cook if you got that mystery box?’ That involvement is really important and it’s one of the pleasures of the show.

Among the guests were newly-crowned Cleo Bachelor Hayden Quinn, Michael Weldon, Kate Bracks, Dani Venn, Alana Lowes and Ellie Paxton-Hall from last year’s series, and judges Matt Preston, George Calombaris and Gary Mehigan, who hammed it up for the cameras. Matt Moran will return to the show in a recurring guest mentor role. The launch also revealed the show’s premiere date: Sunday May 6, which puts it against Channel Nine’s ratings hit The Voice and Channel Seven’s Dancing With the Stars. Network Ten’s Chief Programming Officer David Mott promised that MasterChef will return with a “focus on real food, with real people, telling real stories.” And Jamie Oliver!
