Mitchell Callaway Shares His X Factor Experience With Us

Mitchell Callaway doesn’t seem like your typical music star, and at times seemed like the odd one out on stage during his performances on The X Factor. But his mentor, Natalie Bassingthwaighte, had faith in him from his first audition, and pushed him to sing songs out of his comfort zone. Mitchell was in the bottom two for the first time last night with Johnny Ruffo, and after a deadlock result he was eliminated from the show. We chatted to Mitchell about the highlights of his X Factor experience and how he’ll keep working towards being a country star.

What were you thinking just before Luke announced the result?
[Laughs] I was thinking I’m going home. There’s 50 million 15-year-old girls voting and they’re not gonna vote for a 26-year-old. [Johnny’s] a good kid. He’ll keep going.

What’s the difference between singing on the Monday night and singing for your life?
I actually loved doing it [sing for your life] because I got to do a country song. I enjoyed that — it was probably my most enjoyable moment on the show.

So when it came to song choice, how much did you push for something in the country genre?
I did, but on weeks like party anthem week you can’t really do a country song. It’s just the way it went.

How do you think you would’ve coped with the dance tracks genre next week if you were still in?
Our songs get picked a week in advance so I already had my song picked. But I was a bit iffy.

X Factor: Guy Apologises to Mitchell, Was Defending Declan

On last night’s live verdict show of The X Factor, Guy Sebastian apologised for comments he made after Mitchell Callaway’s performance on Monday night.

On last night’s live verdict show of The X Factor, Guy Sebastian apologised for comments he made after Mitchell Callaway’s performance on Monday night. Guy said, “There’s obviously a time and a place to say something like that and I definitely chose the wrong place to say it and for that I’m really sorry. But I definitely stand by what I say to my boys . . . I’m truly sorry for upsetting Mitchell and choosing the wrong time for saying that.” Guy copped some backlash on Twitter after the incident, with many fans saying he should’ve addressed things with Mitchell off-camera. Today the Daily Telegraph has shed some light on what may have led to Guy’s remarks, reporting that Mitchell had been “stirring up” some of the singers by “pricking them with a pin.” When this happened to Declan Sykes, Guy’s 15-year-old contestant, Declan apparently told Mitchell to “f**k off,” which didn’t go down well with the tattooed contestant (Declan suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome). Both Declan and Mitchell are still in the competition after being saved by fan votes last night — it was Jacqui Newland who exited the show. What do you make of the situation now this side of the story has emerged?

Guy Calls Mitchell Out For Being "Rude to Crew" on X Factor

UPDATE: Despite Natalie Bassingthwaighte expressing her concerns that Mitchell would leave the show, he has tweeted, “Hey guys thanx for all ur support.

UPDATE: Despite Natalie Bassingthwaighte expressing her concerns that Mitchell would leave the show, he has tweeted, “Hey guys thanx for all ur support. Dnt worry I'm not gunna quit. No way would I let my fans my family or Natalie dwn. Love u all #xfactorau.”

Things got a little, erm, rocky at the end of last night’s rock-themed episode of The X Factor. Over 25s contestant Mitchell Callaway closed the show with “Run to Paradise” by The Choirboys, and his performance was mostly praised by the judges. But Guy Sebastian also brought up some of Mitchell’s off-camera, backstage antics in his comments, saying that the tattooed contestant had been “rude to crew” during rehearsals. Guy said, “You’ve got to have the right attitude to this competition. You’ve got to be focused and to be honest, not be rude to people and have the work ethic.” Mel B was apparently unaware of Mitchell’s attitude and said, “I did enjoy that performance, but I’m not sure about your personality now.” Following that, Mitchell wasn’t standing with the rest of the contestants at the end of the show, and we saw his mentor Natalie Bassingthwaighte rushing off once the cameras stopped rolling, presumably to look for him.

While it was fair for Guy to bring up that Mitchell needed to learn his song lyrics on time like everyone else, was it fair for him to have a go at Mitchell’s backstage persona when it was unrelated to the performance?

The Top 12

After weeks of exciting auditions, challenging boot camp, and international home visits with special guests including Beyoncé, Good Charlotte, Leona Lewis, Jason Derülo and Mel C, The X Factor has a top 12! Last night judges and mentors Guy Sebastian (under 25 males), Mel B (under 25 females), Ronan Keating (groups) and Natalie Bassingthwaighte (over 25’s) revealed the three acts they’d each be taking into the live shows, which kick off next Monday. It was an emotion-fuelled episode with surprising decisions — Guy let Trent go, Ronan put an end to Up Front’s X Factor dream (though his decision to take them to LA baffled some viewers), and Natalie had to say goodbye to cancer survivor Pamela and transgender contestant Paige. But this top 12 are the performers the judges think have what it takes to go all the way. We want to know your opinion: do you think these contestants have the X factor?
