Mitchell Callaway doesn’t seem like your typical music star, and at times seemed like the odd one out on stage during his performances on The X Factor. But his mentor, Natalie Bassingthwaighte, had faith in him from his first audition, and pushed him to sing songs out of his comfort zone. Mitchell was in the bottom two for the first time last night with Johnny Ruffo, and after a deadlock result he was eliminated from the show. We chatted to Mitchell about the highlights of his X Factor experience and how he’ll keep working towards being a country star.
What were you thinking just before Luke announced the result?
[Laughs] I was thinking I’m going home. There’s 50 million 15-year-old girls voting and they’re not gonna vote for a 26-year-old. [Johnny’s] a good kid. He’ll keep going.
What’s the difference between singing on the Monday night and singing for your life?
I actually loved doing it [sing for your life] because I got to do a country song. I enjoyed that — it was probably my most enjoyable moment on the show.
So when it came to song choice, how much did you push for something in the country genre?
I did, but on weeks like party anthem week you can’t really do a country song. It’s just the way it went.
How do you think you would’ve coped with the dance tracks genre next week if you were still in?
Our songs get picked a week in advance so I already had my song picked. But I was a bit iffy.
