A new month means a new round of pop culture goodies to get stuck into! Yes, I know we're already a few days into October, but I still put the call out to the Sugar editors to find out what they'll be watching, listening to and reading this month. From associate editor Gen's double dose of Blake Lively, to BellaSugar editor Alison's excitement at the return of Beauty and the Geek (she especially can't wait for the makeover episode), check out what's on our radar this month.

What's Hot This Month: October New Releases

If crime dramas and thrillers are your cup of tea, you’re in luck, because this month there’s a whole bunch of them released in cinemas, including Savages, Lawless and Killing Them Softly — the latter two were also big hits at the Cannes Film Festival.

Then there’s the Aussie flick Mental, which isn’t meant to be a sequel to Muriel’s Wedding, but you know you’ll be in line to see it if you loved the 1994 Aussie classic. Also in the mix is the latest Paranormal Activity instalment, a sweet French film and the much-anticipated Taken 2. Which movies will you be watching in October?

Copy Blake Lively's Fishtail Braid

Blake Lively's continuing to dominate red carpets across the US as she promotes her new movie Savages. From old Hollywood waves to a beach babe textured up 'do, Blake's most recent hairstyle, at the NYC premiere, is the best of both worlds: statement-making, yet simple to recreate. Read on for our step-by-step instructions to creating a fishtail plait and remember, if you're looking to get your braid nice and chunky like Blake's, consider clipping in some hair extensions before you start. Try Schwarzkopf Magic Hair Extensions ($44.95).

  • Begin by pulling hair back into a ponytail (you can skip this step if you want a more casual feel to the braid; simply jump to step two and separate strands at the nape of the neck).
  • Next separate the ponytail into two even sections
  • Take about a half-inch portion of hair from the outer side of the right-hand section and cross it over so that it joins the left-hand section on the inside.
  • Repeat the action but this time on the left-hand side.
  • Depending on how chunky you want your braid to be, you can alter the width of the portions of hair you take. If you take a wider section your braid will be chunkier.
  • Continue to cross the portions over until you reach about two inches from the bottom of your hair. Then secure the braid with an elastic.
  • To style, you can bring the braid over one shoulder if it's long enough.
  • If you want a more textured, less polished end result that is similar to Blake's, hold onto the bottom of the braid at the elastic and begin to gently push the hair upwards, creating a more lived-in texture. Move your fingers up the braid and repeat the action, holding with one hand and pushing up with the other, to create the effect the full way up the braid.
  • Finally, finish off the ponytail with a jewelled or metallic band to add something special to the style. Try these options: Sportsgirl Silver Clean Covered Band ($9.95) or Topshop Gold Section Top Knot (approx $13.50) and secure with hairspray.

Blake Lively and Taylor Kitsch Take Savages to NYC With Oliver and John

Blake Lively continued her busy press tour for Savages (out Sep.

Blake Lively continued her busy press tour for Savages (out Sep. 27) at the movie’s NYC premiere today. The gorgeous blonde, stunning in a striking yellow Gucci gown, had the company of her co-stars Taylor Kitsch, John Travolta and director Oliver Stone, while other stars who supported the screening included Girls actress Zosia Mamet, model Tyson Beckford, Matchbox 20’s Rob Thomas, and Christopher Meloni. On top of photo calls and red carpets, Blake has been making the talk show rounds, appearing on The Late Show with David Letterman and Good Morning America. On the latter program, Blake talked about hanging out with Salma Hayek and the cast on set, saying, “I’m close with my family, so we would have dance parties and cook and [Salma’s] mum would bring tamales.”

Hollywood Knockout: Blake Lively Stuns as Savages Goes on Tour

If we're being totally honest, then we're probably just as excited to see Blake Lively's premiere looks for Oliver Stone's Savages as we are to see the movie itself — and with a glimpse at Blake's first promotional looks, it's not hard to see why.

If we're being totally honest, then we're probably just as excited to see Blake Lively's premiere looks for Oliver Stone's Savages as we are to see the movie itself — and with a glimpse at Blake's first promotional looks, it's not hard to see why. First the actress gave us a full-on bombshell moment in a curve-hugging Zuhair Murad gown and Veronica Lake-style glamazon waves for Tuesday night's LA screening. Now she's furthering her leading-lady status — first, with two ultra-chic versions of the LWD for her appearance on the Late Show With David Letterman yesterday, and most recently her red-hot Michael Kors suit for Good Morning America. The latest is a summery, sunny-yellow Gucci maxi dress that Blake selected for the film's NYC premiere, which she complemented with a pair of gorgeous turquoise earrings. Blake Lively Suits Up in Crimson Menswear

Blake Lively stepped out in slick, red-hot suiting for an appearance on Good Morning America yesterday, and we fell head over heels for Blake's brightly coloured get-up.

Blake Lively stepped out in slick, red-hot suiting for an appearance on Good Morning America yesterday, and we fell head over heels for Blake's brightly coloured get-up. The Savages actress wore an Old Hollywood-inspired ensemble for the LA premiere of the movie, so we were excited to see her go for a menswear-inspired outfit today. She let the fiery red Michael Kors suit take center stage, but we love that her cropped trousers revealed a pair of strappy Christian Louboutins. Watch today's Fab Flash to get all the details.

Beach Babe Blake vs. Old Hollywood Blake

Stepping firmly out of Serena van der Woodsen's shadow, Blake Lively is most definitely having a moment.

Stepping firmly out of Serena van der Woodsen's shadow, Blake Lively is most definitely having a moment. We've always admired her style but while on the promo circuit for her new movie Savages, Blake has been wowing time and again. Most recently she opted for a fresh, low-fi look for an appearance on Good Morning America teaming her red pant suit with a bronze base, gold shadow, pink lip and textured up 'do. But earlier in the week for Monday night's LA screening of the Oliver Stone movie, Blake pulled out all the glamazon stops, opting for Veronica Lake waves, a retro red pout and heavily-loaded lashes. Which look do you prefer on Blake?
