The VMAs rolled into LA yesterday, and some of the hottest names in TV, film, and music stepped out to party inside the Staples Center. We were on the red carpet capturing all the fun, and stars like Pink, Rihanna, and Katy Perry took it upon themselves to keep fans updated on Twitter and Instagram. Taylor Swift met up with US gymnast McKayla Maroney backstage and Aussie actress Rebel Wilson showed off some personalised accessories she wore to the show. Rita Ora got excited to meet a few of her youngest fans while Katy Perry joked around with friends inside the arena. Click through to see all the cute and candid celeb snaps!
Rihanna started today's MTV VMAs with a rowdy performance of her new song "Cockiness," and host Kevin Hart was on stage afterward to start the jokes coming. He verged into some potentially awkward territory when he tried to end the feud between Drake and Chris Brown, both of whom went on to win awards later. Kevin even leaped to Kristen Stewart's defense in his opening riff about mistakes. Katy Perry popped up to present the first award, best pop video, to One Direction. One Direction also later claimed best new artist. Robert Pattinson, meanwhile, joined his Twilight buddies Peter Facinelli, Taylor Lautner, and more to debut a new clip from their upcoming Breaking Dawn Part 2. As for the performances, Miley Cyrus introduced Pink, who put on a boisterous show. Frank Ocean, welcomed by Zoe Saldana, had one of the night's most moving onstage appearances and was followed by Lil Wayne, One Direction, and Green Day. Alica Keys, who took in the fun alongside husband Swizz Beatz and their son Egypt, debuted her new song "Girl on Fire." Taylor Swift also wore her signature red to belt out "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together." The final Moonman for video of the year went to Rihanna for "We Fell in Love." She made a triumphant speech after brushing some dirt off her shoulder — make sure to check out who wore what on the red carpet and the full list of 2012 MTV VMAs winners.
The VMAs are famous for some shocking looks on the red carpet, but this year is notable for being the opposite. Big names — Rihanna, Pink, and Miley Cyrus among them — are coming out in sophisticated gowns that more elegant than OTT; with barely a provocative cut-out, crazy print, or slit to be seen. We're sure that will change as more come out, but for now, check out our guide to who wore what at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards. Want to have your say? You can vote on our red carpet polls, here.

The red carpet at today's MTV VMAs was full of stylish musical stars. White was a theme for a few of the ladies, with Taylor Swift donning a J. Mendel pantsuit and Rihanna picking a simple gown to keep the focus on her new haircut. Katy Perry went colourful, as usual, in an Elie Saab creation. Emma Watson also picked up on the bright tones, wearing a mixed print combo from Peter Pilotto. Miley Cyrus took a new take on a black dress in Emilio Pucci, while Zoe Saldana looked gorgeous in a light mini from Salvatore Ferragamo. There were plenty more girls posing before the main even took place — click through to see Alicia Keys, Rita Ora, Gabby Douglas, and more!
One Direction, everyone's favourite boy band, made their mark on the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards early, quickly scooping up two of the major awards of the night. Winning Moonmen for Best Pop Video and Best New Artist, Niall, Zayn, Liam, Harry and Louis seemed ecstatic as they hugged and ran to accept their awards — and steal a sneaky kiss from Katy Perry! Check out our gallery of the boys on the red carpet and on stage at the MTV VMAs.
It wouldn't be a music awards show without an outrageous red carpet look from Nicki Minaj. Ms Minaj didn't disappoint today, turning up in this striking lace bodysuit embellished with a beaded red outline detail. Sky high platforms, a gravity defying 'do and leather cap topped off her head-turning look. Do you rate Nicki's no-holds-barred take on event dressing?
