Meet the New Cast of Young Talent Time

More than a million viewers tuned into Young Talent Time last night, with many airing their thoughts on the revamp on Twitter. For those of us who weren’t familiar with the original format, which aired from 1971 to 1988, there was a brief history lesson on what the show was like back in the day, when Johnny Young was host (he’s executive producer now) and stars like Dannii Minogue and Tina Arena (returning as a judge/mentor) were fresh-faced up-and-comers. We were also briefly introduced to the new Young Talent Team and saw them perform a medley of hits, as well as a beautiful rendition of Jessie J’s “Price Tag” with only a piano accompaniment. Tina Arena Returns to Young Talent Time as a Judge

Tina Arena is going back to where it all started: Young Talent Time! The Australian singer has been announced as one of the judges and mentors for the new show when it returns to Network Ten in 2012. She joined the original YTT as a 7-year-old in 1974, where she was part of the young cast alongside Dannii Minogue. David Mott, Ten’s Chief Programming Officer, said in a statement, “We couldn’t be more pleased to have Tina Arena on YTT. She has inspired and entertained generations of fans and her advice and guidance for the contestants and cast will be invaluable. She is a born entertainer who is passionate about fostering young talent. What more could we ask for.” Read on for what Tina had to say about joining the show.

Network Ten in 2012: Breakfast, Young Talent Time and More

Network Ten held its 2012 programming launch in Sydney last night to unveil its line-up of shows for the coming year. The big question on everyone’s lips was whether it would be bringing back The Renovators after what has so far been a less-than-impressive debut (it is), and whether rumours of a morning show would also prove to be true (it is). Ten is also bringing back Young Talent Time. Here are some more of the highlights:

Breakfast: Ten is introducing a morning show, Breakfast, to rival Sunrise on Seven and Today on Nine. The first of its hosts, Andrew Rochford, said at the launch, “Breakfast radio has taught me a great deal about how people want to start their day. They want the facts, but they want them in a light and entertaining way.” Sounds like the morning version of The 7PM Project, no?

Young Talent Time: Hoping to bank on the success of Glee and talent-finding programs, Ten is bringing back Young Talent Time, the show that introduced us to the likes of Dannii Minogue and Tina Arena. It will be co-produced by Mr. Johnny Young, the show’s original creator, and will be hosted by Rob Mills.

The Renovators: Ten’s chief programming officer, David Mott, said of their latest reality series, “So far the format has underperformed. But, it’s a brand we believe in so we are working directly with [production company] Shine to renovate The Renovators for 2011 and beyond.”

Puberty Blues: Kathy Lette and Gabrielle Carey’s popular coming-of-age book is coming to the small screen and will be filmed in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire.

Vintage Nicole Kidman From When She Was Only Sweet 16!

Long before Nicole Kidman won over Hollywood in Days of Thunder opposite future (and now ex) husband Tom Cruise, and won an Oscar for her portrayal of Virginia Woolf in The Hours, she starred in an Australian film called BMX Bandits. The film is getting a Blu-ray release in the US on March 15, so EW.com interviewed the director, Brian Trenchard-Smith, who offered plenty of insight on teenage Nicole. He said that when 15-year-old Nic auditioned for his movie, “I could tell right away that she had great dramatic instincts. Some people are born actors. They have a grasp on how to make a line of dialogue believable . . . She was IT as far as I was concerned.” She also blew him away from the very first audition after showing up by herself: “There were a number of other actors at the audition and she left them all in the dust. She was adorable, attractive, and it was a film where I wanted to skirt around the edges of teen sexuality.” Check out the clip below of Nicole on Young Talent Time - it’ll be on the DVD of BMX Bandits and shows Nicole with her frizzy curls and a very Aussie accent!
