Now that Jeff Bridges has that Oscar under his belt, it's time to take a look at his next project. A far cry from Bad Blake, Bridges will reprise his role as Kevin Flynn in the upcoming sequel to the 1982 sci-fi flick, Tron. In Tron Legacy, Flynn's computer savvy son Sam (Garrett Hedlund) follows a tip and sets out to find his father, who's been missing for the past 20+ years. What he finds is a cyber universe complete with spandex, Olivia Wilde and more Day-Glo than Burning Man. Oh what a difference a few decades make! The gaming world is a hell of a lot cooler and clearly more futuristic than what we saw in the original (I've included the hilarious trailer for the first movie after the jump just to prove it). Even if Bridges is much older, it's still a treat to see him back in the arcade-like atmosphere. The movie doesn't hit theatres until next Christmas, but click through to get a taste.
The big winners from this year's Oscars are now basking in the glory of their wins, but for some, there's no rest for the weary. Some familiar faces will continue to shine on the big screen, while other former unknowns begin to capitalise on their newfound star power. Check out the movies that the victors are involved with next.
The Governors Ball was the first stop for many of the winners and presenters after last night's Oscars ceremony. Best actress Sandra Bullock went from chatting about her award in the press room to the afterparty, where she shared a special moment with her supportive husband, Jesse James. Maggie Gyllenhaal didn't claim a statue for Crazy Heart, but she continued the family evening by joining her mother Naomi Foner for a bite. Barbara Streisand cuddled up to Gerard Butler, while Diane Kruger brought her Chanel gown from the red carpet to the ball. Oprah Winfrey joined Gabourey Sidibe after her touching introduction during the best supporting actress presentation. Zoe Saldana stayed in her voluminous dress—which turned out to be quite the trendsetter—, while Neil Patrick Harris relaxed with David Burtka after his amazing opening number. Sigourney Weaver was happy to let her hair down with Anna Kendrick despite Avatar's not winning Best Picture, but Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal were thrilled their film The Hurt Locker took home the accolade.
Jeff Bridges took home his Oscar at today's show, winning best actor for his role in Crazy Heart. After giving a sweet speech up on stage, he stepped back to the press room. The Big Lebowski came up more than once, and Jeff Bridges showed that he still has a lot of The Dude in him. He also gushed about his wife of 33 years and two daughters. Here's highlights:
On his whole career as an actor: "Well you know ups and downs, or as The Dude would say—strikes and gutters, man."
On what he has in common with Bad Blake: "The music is what I most identified with in Bad. I've been writing music and playing music since I was a kid. Unlike bad, I don't think he had great parents and family. I have a strong marriage and family. Well, the first thing that popped in my mind [as the key to success] is my wife, my support. She holds that kite string so that I don't go way out there. It's so sweet being reeled back in, back home. My wife and my girls, my daughters are the tail on my kite that keep me centred."
On forming a country band with Colin Farrell: "Sounds like a good idea."
Friday marked the 25th anniversary of the Independent Spirit Awards, which they celebrated by airing it live for the first time. The precursor to today's Oscars is always a looser affair, but the red carpet had it's own impressive ensembles—vote on them with all of Fab and Bella's love it or hate it polls. Lenny Kravitz had a Hollywood up-and-comer, his daughter Zoe, on his arm to support his movie Precious. Carey Mulligan was solo, which is apparently her plan for today as well which dashes our hopes that she'd bring her cute boyfriend Shia LaBeouf. Vera Farmiga was representing theUp In The Air cast in her red dress. The winners were able to have a bit of fun both mingling with friends during the big dinner and on stage where anything goes. Mo'Nique and Gabourey Sidibe both took home statues for their work in Precious, which was the night's big winner—see the full list of winners here. While Mo'Nique is the favourite for today as well, in the press room she said she isn't expecting anything. Ryan Reynolds and Maggie Gyllenhaal carried their champagne on stage and she was also called up to join her Crazy Heart costar Jeff Bridges when he was named best actor. Colin Farrell embraced Elton John as he entered the awards right as they started. During the show, Jeremy Renner checked out the backstage gifting suites and Elle Lounge. Award season's big finale is today and we'll be updating live so keep checking back all day for the latest!
