Younger’s Molly Bernard Says Fans Will Be “Heartbroken” Over the Series’ Ending

Molly Bernard

With Younger season 7 premiering on April 15 on Stan, there’s no doubt that fans across the globe are grabbing the tissues, ready to say goodbye to Liza (Sutton Foster), Kelsey (Hilary Duff), Charles (Peter Hermann), Josh (Nico Tortorella), Diana (Miriam Shor) and Maggie (Debi Mazar), however, no one is sadder to see the show’s end than the cast themselves.

For Molly Bernard who plays the fearless (and season 7 stand-out — you’ll see!) Lauren Heller on the hit TV series, the last days of filming were devastatingly hard.

“I’m sad to say goodbye to my character and devastated to say goodbye to my castmates,” Bernard told POPSUGAR Australia during an interview for the series’ final season.

“You know, our directors, our showrunners, the crew; we have a very tight happy little ship over there and in the last days of wrapping up, it was sad to see them taking down bits of the set as we were filming in other locations. I was like, ‘you’re ripping my heart out’!”

If you’ve been watching the show from the very beginning, the underlying theme has always been: Are you, ‘Team Josh’ or ‘Team Charles’? While we all have our own opinions, the cast themselves have very “different answers”.

“Mine is probably the most boring but I’m going to share with you anyway. I fluctuate from season to season. I’ve never been a die-hard ‘Team Charles’ or ‘Team Josh’. In previous years, I’m ‘Team Liza’ because I am, but what I will say and tease is the way that the writers end this series, I am team that.”

She continued: “It’s so good and fans are going to have their heart broken and then have their heart burst open with joy. It’s such a sweet, perfect ending and I really can’t wait for you guys to see it.”

Bernard’s character — who has gone from being fired from her role as PR queen at Hector and Dorf (one of Bernard’s favourite storylines) to now working at Empirical — is as bold as she is brazen. It’s something that she herself has learnt a lot from.

“I wish I had a tenth of Lauren’s confidence and self-assuredness,” the 33-year-old said. “It’s been amazing to play her because I think maybe I’ve caught a little bit of it. We’re very different. I’m a pretty nervous, neurotic, anxiety-ridden little ball of fire and Lauren is a ball of fire, so I think that’s where we overalp.”

During one of the first episodes of season 7, Bernard had to conquer a fear of heights when she was lowered from the ceiling in a harness.

“It was one of those moments where I felt very grateful for playing someone like Lauren who is fearless. Very transparently, I’ve lived my life with a lot of fear. At that moment, I had to physically and mentally conquer my fear of heights. And that’s a gift.”

Of course, there to cheer her on was her on-screen mum, Kathy Najimy, who plays Lauren’s mother Denise — who we’re very happy to report is just as incredible in person as you would think she is.

“Light of all lights,” Bernard said. “She is an effervescent creature and I’m obsessed with her. She’s someone who I text regularly. We just met each other and were like, ‘Oh sh-t, you’re in our tribe. We’re in the same tribe here.’

“She’s also taught me how to be braver on set and ad-lib and be bold. She’s an amazing role model and incredible to work with.”

Now that the series is coming to an end (sad face), Bernard does think there’s a silver lining.

“I realised like, the great thing about being on a TV show is that when I miss them, I can press a little button on my remote and you can start hanging out again, and I’m like, ‘Hey girl, missed you, what is up!'”

Stream the first four episodes of Younger Season 7 from 6 pm Thursday, April 15, with episodes dropping weekly from April 22.
