To celebrate the milestone, we interviewed Skinstitut's resident skin care expert Zoe Devine about the past 10 years, and why cosmedical skin care is here to stay.
POPSUGAR Australia: Congratulations on 10 years of Skinstitut! Why do you think Australian women love the brand so much?
Zoe Devine: Since our whole ethos at Skinstitut is about providing value, women began to take notice and appreciate that they could now have exceptional products at an outstanding price that also delivered on results. We also believe it's our no-nonsense approach to skincare. It's refreshing to have a brand speak with truth and we found this really resonated with our clients. Loyal customers began to know that Skinstitut is not about hype, expensive packaging or luxury, but rather, scientific formulations based on clinically proven ingredients and noticeable skin results.
Women began to take notice and appreciate that they could now have exceptional products at an outstanding price that also delivered on results.
PS: Do you think the Australian approach to beauty has changed in the past 10 years?
ZD: Absolutely, yes. Consumers are exceptionally savvy. They shop around and they know what they are looking for — we have really seen the rise of the 'expert'. For example, we now have our own brow specialist, lash specialist, you visit a specialist nail technician, and then you see your hair colourist who might be different to the hairdresser cutting your hair. Skinstitut's whole philosophy speaks to this shift: we are passionate about educating both professionals and consumers alike . . . [We] pass this knowledge onto our stockists to ensure each client of theirs feels confident they are visiting their own highly trained skin specialist.
PS: What has been the most popular or best-selling product in the past 10 years?
ZD: Glycolic Scrub 14% is by far our most popular and best-selling. We receive overwhelming feedback from both men and women commenting on how effective this product is for them — when used it in conjunction with hair removal treatment, it banishes body blemishes and the likelihood of ingrown hairs. On the face it's great for stubborn blackheads, transforming dull or lacklustre skin and helping to alleviate breakout prone skin.
PS: We're keen to try the new Skin Brilliance pack, which is a special 10th Anniversary release. What are your favourite products in the pack?
ZD: For me, picking a favourite is near impossible, as I'm in love with the entire range! Top of my list right now might have to be my L-Lactic Cleanser. After struggling with breakout prone skin and adult acne for many years this cleanser is the perfect daily treatment cleanser. It's hydrating and balancing which reduces the T-zone oil slick I used to get half way through the day, it brings down redness in my skin, plus it gently exfoliates to reduce the likelihood of breakouts. Another favourite would have to be the Even Blend Serum — this is another product we receive overwhelming feedback about. People are always astounded at how it does exactly what it says it will do — even out the skin tone. Perfect for sun damage, pigmentation, dull, uneven or breakout prone skin. Best of all it is very lightweight so you can apply it under your moisturiser and won't even notice you're wearing it.
We were founded on the belief that high-end skincare should be affordable and accessible to everyone. 10 years on, we still stand true to that philosophy.
PS: Our team has been writing a lot of content about beauty brands being a force for good in the industry. How has Skinstitut has been able to bring about positive change?
ZD: Since we stand for truth and honesty we always strive to be transparent with absolutely every ingredient we put into our products. Being a cosmedical grade product means that whenever we use an ingredient we ensure it is within the therapeutic threshold. This means that the amount of the ingredient used is not only safe but also has scientific research to show that there is sufficient to deliver a benefit. Skinstitut is a vegan skincare range and we do not use any animal-derived ingredients, nor would we ever test on animals. And of course, we were founded on the belief that high-end skincare should be affordable and accessible to everyone. 10 years on, we still stand true to that philosophy. We believe everyone has the right to have great skin so we will continue to offer Australia's most affordable and in demand cosmedical grade skincare for our customers to enjoy.
