The opinions about chocolate are varied and passionate. Does it affect acne? How much should you actually be eating? Will chocolate solve your problems?! (Yes, yes it will.) As Easter looms and the temptation of the sweet stuff becomes a very real dilemma, we wanted to know if it's really as bad as people make it out to be — in a beauty sense.
We know the effects of sugar on our skin, but what about chocolate specifically? We spoke to Emma Hobson, the education manager for the International Dermal Institute and Dermalogica, to get the low down on the effects of chocolate on your skin. Turns out there's one type that you should be loving above all others . . . dark!
- If you suffer from breakouts and you can't resist chocolate, eat the dark stuff; it contains more zinc which is needed to heal your skin.
- Eat dark chocolate if you want to stay younger for longer; it has approximately 50 percent less sugar. Sugar hardens our skin proteins such as collagen and causes trauma called AGES, which results in premature ageing of the skin.
- Dark chocolate contains about 70 percent cocoa polyphenols, which are terrific anti-oxidants.
- People who are acne-prone should avoid eating chocolate as it can be a trigger for breakouts. Some of the ingredients in chocolate that might exacerbate acne are caffeine and theobromine, which are known to clog pores.
- Dark chocolate is thought to be good for inflammation associated with the circulatory system.
