There aren't many things that we're openly against on Bella. Wanna wear orange lipstick? Go for it. Fancy getting a buzzcut? Knock yourself out. Dying to dress like Taylor Momsen? We're tiring of her same-old style, but if you're not, do it. But there is one thing that we RECOMMEND NEVER DOING: going to the solarium. It's bad. Like really, really bad. The International Agency for Research in Cancer ranks tanning beds as a Grade 1 carcinogen—the same as smoking.
Cancer Minister Frank Sartor said yesterday, "We know that exposure to ultraviolet radiation is a significant risk factor in the development of skin cancer and tanning units emit artificial UV up to several times greater than the strength of the midday sun." Combine that with the fact that melanoma is the most common form of cancer in females aged 15-29 and we think the new government legalisation — that plans to ban those under 25 or those with Skin Photo Type 2 (rarely tans and mostly burns) from using solariums in NSW from April 2011 — is amazeballs. In August '11 there are further plans to have the ban applied to EVERYBODY under 30. Are you all for it or do you think it's up to you to decide whether you tan in a solarium or not? Vote now.
