We asked members of our review panel, the Sugar Spotlight, to share their thoughts on L’Oréal Paris' Base Magique Transforming Smoothing Primer ($29.95). In the spotlight first is Yolanda with her video review. For more written reviews on the primer from readers, just keep reading.

“Pores be GONE! After trialling L'Oreal Paris Base Magique Transforming Smoothing Primer for just over a week I was very impressed with the results. I tend to have oily skin, especially around 3pm; however when using the primer I noticed my pores were a lot smaller and the product gave me an even skin tone that lasted the whole day! I did notice my foundation lasted longer as well — all important advantages in my books. Applying is easy but you must follow the instructions provided. Skipping a step will leave flakes over your face — something I learnt on the second day. It doesn’t have a scent which is what I prefer and I loved the texture; it really does feel smooth and velvety! The bottle is small and compact, making it convenient to squeeze into your travel makeup case. For only $29.95 this product is excellent value and worth every cent. Overall, I would highly recommend it!” — Penny

“Confession: I’m not one to bother with primer on a regular basis. I like my morning makeup routine to be quick and I’ve always feared adding another cream to my face would cause unnecessary build-up and breakouts. How wrong was I? After using L’Oreal’s Base Magique primer I could see a difference in my skin’s surface almost immediately. I no longer had to worry about shine in my T-Zone or the inevitable afternoon makeup-slide. This primer helped my makeup feel fresh all day long, which is great if you’re heading out after work without time to touch-up. Although the consistency took a while to get used to (the mousse-like texture can appear cakey if not warmed in your hands beforehand), the end result is definitely worth going back for. It’s official — I’m now a primer convert and I’m loving it.” — Clementine

“I have large, crater-sized pores on my cheeks and nose. Well, I used to, before I started using L'Oreal Paris Base Magique Transforming Smoothing Primer! This stuff makes putting on foundation a breeze. It's a little thick in terms of consistency but a little goes a long way. I smoothed it on my cheeks and nose using my fingers, keeping it focused on the target areas that are most problematic, and I could see the pores disappearing before my eyes. If I didn't have uneven skin tone thanks to freckles, I wouldn't need to put foundation on, it's that good. It's an absolute dream to smooth over my skin. Not only did it make putting on foundation a breeze, it actually helped it stay on longer, too! I thoroughly recommend using this product on target areas, and spreading it out thinly, waiting a few minutes for it to set before putting on foundation.” — Jasmine

“I enjoyed using the L'Oréal Paris Base Magique Transforming Smoothing Primer to help keep my makeup on, especially with my combination to oily skin. As I am well into my 30s, I need a primer that also helps smooth over those increasing fine lines and enlarged pores. I love the silky marshmallow-like consistency and how it really does even out my skin texture. This is especially important as I am a working mum and I have quite a few days where I don't have a lot of time to do my makeup. It also works well over my moisturised skin and helps my foundation glide on. I like the packaging, but I just wish there was more volume on offer. However, because it is in a pot it is great that I can control how much I use (as opposed to a tube). If it had an SPF factor it could actually be magic!” — Tina

“Not only did it feel incredible on my skin but I really felt that my makeup lasted a lot longer during the day. It was very soft and moisturising, and incredibly light which is exactly how a primer should be. My makeup literally glided on top, and I felt my face was a lot brighter and smother after a few days as well. I even started applying some of the primer before I went to bed, so it could moisturise my skin overnight. I’d wake up and my skin would look and feel great. I also love the colour! It’s very feminine and very practical to apply — I also love how practical it is to carry around. I literally throw it into my bag and sometimes reapply the primer throughout the day, over my makeup, to give me that finished, polished look.” — Eleni

“The L'Oréal Paris Base Magique Transforming Smoothing Primer had a very thick texture that was hard to apply at first, but I did get used to it. Usually I am too lazy to wear makeup every day, so being able to put the primer on to improve my skin tone and texture was ideal, and it did a great job at that. I do use a lot of products (serums, moisturiser, sunscreen), so found that if I was too heavy handed with the primer, I ended up with white flakes on my skin when it dried. I didn't notice a difference when I did wear makeup, so I would probably call this a skin perfector rather than a primer.” — Belinda

“I had only used a primer once before (in my teens) and was sure it caused my skin to break out, so I was a little hesitant to use one again. But, I was very pleasantly surprised. It felt great on my skin, there were no breakouts and best of all and I found my skin tone looked more even and my makeup lasted the entire day. Out with the morning moisturiser and in with the primer for me!” — Marie

"I have quite an uneven skin tone, therefore I'm an every day foundation user. Finding a primer that suits my skin type, gives me smooth makeup finish and makes my foundation last longer is high on my beauty priority list. I needn't have looked far, though, as L'Oréal Paris Base Magique Transforming Smoothing Primer ticked every one of my boxes. Not only did it sink into my skin, it made my foundation glide on, giving me a flawless, airbrushed finish that lasted throughout the day. Although the pot was a little small, I'll definitely be re-purchasing." — Leanne

"I'm a regular foundation wearer but have only tried primer a few times, and have felt that it left a thick, pebbly-like residue. However L'Oreal Paris Base Magique Transforming Smoothing Primer was the total opposite. It had a soft, smooth consistency that reduced the pores around the base of my nose and across my cheeks, and created a great foundation base. It's one product I'll be adding to my makeup bag." — Carole

“I have combination skin and as a result, I've tried a number of different primers to assist with reducing oil in the T-zone, medium-sized pores around the nose, as well as prolonging the wear of foundation. L'Oréal Paris Base Magique Transforming Smoothing Primer comes in functional packaging — a glass pot with black lid. I prefer tube/pump dispensers as I am bit OCD about dipped my grubby fingers into a pot. The product is quite small — like an eye cream, and judging at the RRP of $29.95, I would definitely prefer more product at that price. The primer is fragrance-free (yay for sensitive skin), and is a light pink paste. It's so smooth, and blended beautifully into the skin, blurring the size of pores and imperfect skin tone, leaving a matte finish. It felt light after application and was it was invisible, plus my pores didn't feel suffocated. I trialled primer over both liquid and powder foundations. I felt that it prolonged the wear of both foundations, but it was more effective with the powder foundation. I really enjoyed using this primer. It definitely does deliver instant results as the product claims, however, I currently have a stash of primers that do provide a comparable result." — Jenny
