“I am always a little sceptical of primers, and after using some usually wonder what all the fuss is about. BUT, after using the L’Oréal Paris Base Magique Transforming Smoothing Primer, I may have changed my view. The putty-like lotion smooths easily over my skin, leaving it feeling satin-smooth. I couldn’t believe how smooth my cheeks felt actually! Even before foundation, my fresh-as face looked a little healthier, less shiny and super-smooth. My base went on so much more easily than before, and I found the coverage to be more even, and seamless-looking. Whilst it did help my makeup stay put longer, it wasn’t so much the stay-fast factor but the smoothing ability of this primer that impressed me. I am pretty low-maintenance, so wouldn’t be bothered with this for every day, but for when I want to do my face properly, this primer is in my essentials kit.” — Shelley

“I tried the L’Oréal Paris Base Magique Transforming Smoothing Primer under my makeup for a week at work and also for going out in the evenings. It has a very faint fragrance that is pleasant and lovely soft rose colour to it. The texture has a classic primer feel to it — incredibly soft and smooth but it does require a good amount of warming up to get it to the consistency that makes it easiest to smooth over skin. Once on, it has a heavy feel and applying makeup over the top requires extra precision and to pat on with fingertips/brush rather using a sweeping motion. Once I had put on foundation there was a noteable difference in the appearance of my skin — the effect was a seamless, matte finish without being cakey. I didn't need to use as much foundation for coverage which is a plus, as I tend to wear expensive ones! It did mean that I had to be lighter on bronzer and blush as my skin was a little "stickier" than usual, however if you allowed the products to settle this would fade. Packaging is fine — a little difficult to get out of the jar — it would be better in a tube so that you are more hygienic in application. Alternatively it could come with a little spatula. Overall, I was very impressed with the product. The only changes I would make as mentioned would be packaging related and if possible to have it feel a little more light weight/less sticky.” — Alice H

“I’m not a foundation person, but when I do wear it for important, all-day events, a primer is essential. I have to say that I was pretty impressed with L’Oréal Paris Base Magique Transforming Smoothing Primer. The formula is smooth, and it was really easy to apply. I didn’t need to use much of the product, and the small amount I used for my whole face created a silky base for my foundation. I also really liked how it made my skin feel – like it was perfect! I’m pleased with the results and will always use it before foundation.” — Naomi

“Nice packaging — the black and pink colour and simple design looks really classy. The product is a good 15ml size which means you can go through the product in a shorter timeframe and get a new one before it expires. It makes a good size for travelling, too! The primer has got a very mild scent which is almost not noticeable. Although it looks quite pink in shade, it turns translucent when you apply it to skin. The primer feels thick when I first take it out of the jar, following the instruction to rub it between fingers before applying on face is magical. A little of primer goes a long way as you only need a very thin layer. My skin instantly feels smoother with a matte finish. The pores around my nose seem less visible although they are meant to be invisible — it's not really a big issue for me as the liquid foundation will do the trick to cover the pores. It is very easy to use and the foundation does last longer with the use of this primer. On a lazy day, I wouldn't mind just using this smoothing primer with a bit of powder foundation on top of it for a natural look. It's very suitable for Spring/Summer as it feels very light! Good texture but will be even better if it could really hide my pores!” — Alice K

“Thanks for sending me this item to try. The L’Oréal Paris Base Magique Transforming Smoothing Primer came in a 15 ml size, which at first I thought you would go through it pretty quickly, but as you use such a small amount, it would last for a few months at least. I normally prefer products to be fragrance free, and the primer doesn’t have any distinguishable smell, so won’t irritate the eyes. The product worked well under a few different types of foundation. It was tested under liquid foundation, powder makeup and mineral foundation, it seemed to work and keep the skin feeling smooth. Some mineral foundations make the pores look larger, so give this a go underneath it. It’s been hard to try this to see if it works in the heat, as it’s not been that hot recently, so I can’t give proper feedback in that regards to making makeup last, when it would normally melt off. The negative — L’Oréal used to have lovely products made in France and this item is made in China, which is off putting. It wouldn’t have been an item I normally would buy, but on saying that, the product did what it said it would do. There’s also a lot of excess packaging, with double cardboard, which is totally unnecessary.” — Cat

“Wow! How cool does this product feel? It’s like putting a cloud on your face. The texture is like no other primer on the market, in fact I had to try it a few times to get used to it. The primer slid onto my face very easily and it feels very silky and smooth, but it has quite a thick consistency, almost like a face mask. I found it quite easy to distribute and didn’t take too long to sink in. It doesn’t have too much of a fragrance at all which is good if you don’t like smelly things! I wore it every day for a week and noticed that my makeup not only went on more evenly, but lasted longer, especially in the areas that it normally wears off quickest. I’m not sure if it has evened out my skin tone, maybe I need to use it a little longer to see those results. The packaging was a little tricky, the product actually slipped out of the outer box when I unpacked it, but besides that, the actual container that the product is stored in is very luxurious and made me feel more like I was using a luxury product. All around, definitely giving a go if you are looking at using a new primer, I will definitely be using the rest of tub I have!” — Caitlin

“Being an everyday foundation wearer, I never understood the importance of a primer until I tried this one. Firstly, it was like applying velvet to my face, secondly it helped mattify my T-zone, so that when I put my foundation on it didn’t look so shiny, which meant I used less powder over my foundation. I was also pleasantly surprise about how much it helped the staying power of my makeup! Usually, my face would look a bit patchy towards the end of the day, but with the primer, I wasn’t as shiny, and my foundation looked pretty flawless. I LOVE this product, this one will be staying in my beauty bag.” — Angelique

“When a primer can stand the 38 degree heat then you know that you have found the right product. I wore L’Oréal Paris Base Magique Transforming Smoothing Primer under my regular foundation to test it out. I have always found that foundation slides off my nose and corner of my nose. It was tough since powdering it meant losing the dewy look, so I thought if the primer can hold the foundation on my nose in this heat then it's "the product." I was pleasantly surprised to see that foundation was intact even after a whole day of shopping and I didn’t look a shiny mess. The primer has no smell (at least I couldn’t detect any) and it had a velvety texture. Even though it was an extra step in my makeup routine, it didn’t feel heavy under my makeup. I don’t have major pores to start with, so I wouldn’t be able to comment on its pores reducing claims. The only thing which I think could have been done better was the packaging, maybe pump or tube for hygiene purposes.” — Maddy

“The L’Oréal Paris Base Magique Transforming Smoothing Primer is a beautiful looking light-pink product in sleek packaging. Its texture is unique with a thick, powdery feel to it and it has a light, pleasant scent. I found it a little thick to spread over my skin easily, but once on it provided an effective base for my foundation to cling to. I found you need to make sure it is completely blended and not to use too much, as sometimes it became a little lumpy on my face. However, the product did do what it claims to do, effectively helping my makeup to last longer, smoothing my pores and evening my skin tone.” — Meaghan

“I'm a big fan of the L’Oréal Paris Base Magique Transforming Smoothing Primer. I've tried primers before but haven't been overly impressed with how much longer they made my makeup last. This one not only did that, but it smoothed the texture of my skin that I have from having quite enlarged pores. I've already recommended it to girlfriends and will continue to sing its praises.” — Sarah
