Is It Rude to Apply Lipstick in Public?
Just as men aren't supposed to wear hats at the table, women aren't supposed to powder their nose or apply lipstick either. Which is all well and good in theory, but what if you're wearing ruby red lipstick that needs constant attention? You can't go to the bathroom 20 times, people will start to talk.
So what's a girl to do? Well, Bella consulted Emily Post (queen of all etiquette) for the official word on reapplying in public and as it turns out, there's no right or wrong answer:
Why it's rude: "In general, personal grooming should be done in private for the simple reason that it can be annoying and it’s tacky," Post explains. "Still, think first! When in doubt, don’t do it, such as when you’re at a business meal or with people you don’t know very well." Keep reading . . .
Why it's not: According to Post, "It’s okay to quickly apply lipstick at the table if you’re with close friends or relatives in a non-business situation, and at a non-deluxe restaurant."
So, depending on where you are and who you with it might be fine. But then again it might not. Maybe I'll just stick to clear gloss from now on . . .
