The Next Big Thing in Skincare Is in Your Spice Rack
You might be surprised to hear that the new natural skincare wonder is in your spice rack: Turmeric. A plant in the ginger family this spice is usually seen in its deep yellow powder form and is used in lots of Indian cuisine. Now not just tasty and internally beneficial — studies have suggested turmeric can help prevent dementia and even some cancers — this ingredient is starting to make its mark in the beauty industry.
We spoke to the founder of toxin-free beauty e-tailer Nourished Life, Irene Falcone, about the benefits of this unsung hero, "Turmeric is rich in curcumin which is the key active ingredients that gives it anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. Curcumin's antioxidant ability not only prevents premature signs of ageing in the skin, but also helps to maintain strong, lush hair by preventing damage to hair follicles." We were surprised to find this natural ingredient is already in some of the products we're using at home, so keep a look out and double check some of your products and their ingredient listings, it might be written as turmeric or by its scientific name curcuma longa.
"As an anti-inflammatory, turmeric can reduce puffiness and redness (especially under the eyes) for bright, glowing skin. Turmeric also helps to regulate sebum (oil) production, which coupled with its antibacterial properties and ability to reduce appearance of pigmentation, makes it a great natural treatment for acne and acne scarring," explains Irene. A super spicey skincare secret, we predict this is going to be one of the biggest natural beauty trends this year. Get amongst it before it goes mainstream by reading on and clicking to buy the products below, they all contain turmeric and will do wonders for your complexion.
