There a few classic makeup looks that every woman should have a handle on. The smoky eye. Winged eyeliner. And a red lip. Other trends will come and go but these styles are iconic for a reason — they have some serious staying power. Many worry than a red lip won't suit them, but as Illamasqua makeup artist Mikele Simone points out, "red lipstick is the best colour to choose when you are unsure, because it comes in so many tones you are bound to find a colour to suit." The key is to find the shade that suits your skin tone and Mikele is here to help.

Keep reading . . .Pale skin: "The paler the skin the bigger the impact," according to Simone. Red is a great colour for pale skins as it'll brighten the complexion, but because "paler skins with pink undertones are prone to redness, stay away from orange based reds." Instead opt for a blue-based reds ("think berry tones, not tomato reds," Simone advises) such as

Olive skin: Those with olive or darker skin tones should use shades that are "warmer and orange based," advises Simone. "They have a higher tendency to appear sallow so orange-based lipsticks can really give the skin a lift." Try

  • Always line and fill the lips with in a matching shade
  • Always apply reds with a lip brush for a clean line and steady application
  • Reds can definitely be worn during the day but make sure you go for a natural eye
