Zoom Teeth Whitening Review Before and After Pictures

5 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Tried Teeth Whitening

Having a gleaming smile is up there with flawless skin, I think it's fair to say we all want it. So when I was offered to trial a Philips Zoom Whitening treatment at Quality Dental in North Sydney, I signed myself up . . . but I'd be lying if I didn't say I had a few reservations.

Here I've got them down to five things I wish I'd known before I nervously booked in for the treatment - things you should know if you're considering whitening your teeth too.

It Really Doesn't Hurt

I promise! I was all cold sweats and apprehensive angst before the first round, of three applications, was applied. But I was pleasantly surprised! OK, it's not like a relaxing facial or spine-tingling massage, but it was really fine and it just felt strange more than anything else.

However, the next day is when your teeth feel a little sensitive and you can get a few shooting sting-like pains. But they were very short-lived and didn't stop me from eating and drinking as usual (just light-coloured things, more on that below). I was given a gel that also helped to calm any sensitivity I had after the treatment. This was actually the most uncomfortable part of the whole thing — but it just feels strange and like you've eaten some ice cream too fast! You know that sensitive twinge you get? Yeah, that feeling. But it was completely gone after 24 hours.

Your Choice Of Dentist Can Make All the Difference

Philps Zoom ambassador Dr. Luke Cronin walked me through the whole process before I even got into the dental chair, answered all my (annoying) questions, and fully explained the whole procedure. This meant I felt safe, happy and prepared for what was to come. He also did a really good job of protecting my gums before he started the treatment — he applied a rubber-like product, that I imagine looks like wall filler, which set and provided a barrier for my gums. Then the hydrogen peroxide gel was applied to my teeth, the blue light was switched on and I was left to watch TV — with little to no discomfort at all. The blue light part is what sets Zoom apart, called the WhiteSpeed Light it increases the bleaching reaction of the hydrogen peroxide in the gel to deliver accelerated whitening.

With a recommended retail pricetag of $600-$900, you definitely want to know that you're getting top notch service. The treatment itself only takes about 45 minutes, but you should allow longer for the pre and post consultation. The best advice I can give is, don't be afraid to ask too many questions. Before, during, after — the clinic and their dental team are there to make you feel comfortable and confident with your decision.

You're Not Actually Bleaching the Outside Of Your Tooth

I know, right, what?! That's what I thought too. But Dr. Luke showed me this really awesome diagram of your tooth and it's actually the second layer of your tooth that holds the colour (and can get yellow) so that's the bit that needs lightening. This means you're not eroding the outside of the tooth at all (a common misconception).

The Results Are Really Quite Impressive

True story. I always thought my teeth weren't too bad, but having a closer look at the before and after shots, you can clearly see the difference in colour. (And also my goggle mark! Coolness.)

You Need to Commit to Saying No to Wine and Coffee For Two Whole Weeks After

If you want the results to stay forever, you need to commit to keeping dark and highly-staining foods and drinks far, far away from your mouth for two whole weeks. Lucky for me, I'd decided to go on a pre-birthday detox only a few days before my treatment — so pat on the back for just another reason to deny caffeine and alcohol temptations.

Overall I was super-happy with the results, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting to brighten their smile.
