Australian Fashion Week is almost as much about the beauty looks as it is about clothes. How was the models’ hair styled? Is their makeup natural or bold with a focus on certain parts of the face? And how is their overall beauty look complementing the outfits?

This year’s AFW gave us a handful of beauty looks we can use as inspiration for our own hair, skin and makeup. From slept-in, dark eye makeup, to embracing natural hair texture and blending hair into an outfit, these are some of the best beauty looks we spotted at AFW 2024.

Heavy Kohl Eyeliner

Morning-after kohl-lined eyes and black eyeshadow was spotted several times at Australian Fashion Week. It was seen at Michael Lo Sordo, with the dark makeup complementing floor-length gowns in lace, silk and chainmail.

Models at Karla Spetic, which included sexologist Chantelle Otten, also had heavy eye makeup. Most beauty looks at the show paired dark eyes with rosy lips. Skin was left seemingly bare.

Slept-in, black eye makeup was also at Injury, complementing a wet hair, crimped style.

Embracing Hair’s Natural Texture

A common thread with hair throughout many shows was that its natural texture was embraced. Hair stylists worked with what they had and didn’t try to manipulate it too much into doing something different.

“We were given a general direction, but what was very important from the beginning was the model’s individuality,” says Alex Fuchs, who directed the hair for Mastani, using Kevin.Murphy products. “Their individual look, being celebrated. We worked with their natural hair texture and parts.”

Models at Blanca had their hair looks created by John Pulitano with O&M products. Ahead of the show, Pulitano said each girl would have a different hair look, but all would appear effortless.

“It’s very natural, with enhanced textures and rawness,” he said. “The Blanca girl is chic, cool and understated and the hair really shows that.”

Silver Makeup Accents

Silver featured heavily in makeup looks at AFW. At Albus Lumen, models had dark smoky eyes with silver eyeshadow or a more subtle silver eye look, with the colour dabbed in the corners and underneath the eyes, as well as on the top bridge of the nose.

At Mariam Seddiq, held in hidden CBD club The Vault House, under Machine Hall, one model took the silver look to the extreme with her face, neck, décolletage and body painted in the chrome hue.

No Makeup Makeup

‘No makeup makeup’ was a big trend at last year’s AFW and the same was true again this year. The beauty look is all about subtly accentuating features, but with the focus on moisturised, flawless skin. Models at Injury, Blanca and Mariam Seddiq were slathered in Embryolisse Lait-Creme Concentre Moisturiser, which gave them plump, hydrated skin.

No makeup makeup was also strong at P.E Nation, which showed the brand’s new direction under Pip Edwards’ sole creative direction. The new collection was much more muted than the bold designs it’s known for, and the beauty looks matched that toned-down aesthetic with minimal makeup and ‘second day hair’, created by the show’s partner KMS.

Side Parts

Despite what Gen Z has said about side parts, they are still in style, if the AFW ’24 runways was anything to go by. Voluminous hair side parted was spotted at Alix Higgins, Third Form and All Is Gentle Spring, the only show at AFW to not allow phones.
